United Gulf is a Halifax-based development company responsible for the planning, construction & development of projects ranging from commercial plazas to high-rise mixed-use developments with residential, commercial, and retail tenants, to traditional apartment.

The development, construction, and operation of all projects is managed internally by our team of experienced professionals.

We are seeking a proficient concept
Design Manager to join our team.

This role will involve working closely with junior in-house designers and external architects working on concepts on a variety of properties.


As Design Director, you will be responsible for developing initial design ideas, creating concept sketches, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring visionary architectural concepts to life.


Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Collaborate with clients, project managers, and design teams to understand project goals, requirements, and constraints.
  • Assist in the development of design guidelines, principles, and standards for the architectural team.
  • Explore various design options and iterate on concepts based on feedback and feasibility.

Design

  • Generate innovative and imaginative architectural concepts that align with project objectives and organizational vision.
  • Create concept sketches, diagrams, and visual representations to communicate design ideas effectively.

Communication

  • Present and explain design concepts to stakeholders, incorporating their feedback into iterative design processes.
  • Strong communications skill to effectively liaise with architects, engineers, and other teams.

Quick Problem Solving

  • Work closely with technical architects, engineers, and other experts to ensure design concepts are both innovative and feasible to implement.
  • Address issues in construction in support of Project Managers and contractors.

Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct research to stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and design innovations.

Team Collaboration

  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, encouraging open communication and knowledge sharing among team members.
  • Ability to adapt and collaborate with crossfunctional teams.
  • Integrate organizational preference into concepts using experience through designbuild cycle at United Gulf.

Qualifications

  • Excellent visual and verbal communication skills to effectively convey design ideas.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and constructability.
  • Ability to bridge from concept to the built environment.
  • Experience working on projects of varying scales and types, including commercial, residential, institutional, or urban design.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design practices and green building principles.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization tools.
  • Understanding of parametric design and digital fabrication techniques.
  • Membership in relevant architectural associations or organizations is an asset.
  • Proficiency in creating rapid sketches and concept solutions.

Requirements:

The following are requirements of the position;

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or a related field.
  • Proven experience in conceptual design, with a portfolio showing successful projects.
  • Indepth knowledge of building codes and other regulations.
  • Proficiency in architectural design software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
