Position Description:

SickKids Legal Services
is seeking a
collaborative Legal Counsel with experience in privacy law.

This permanent full-time role will focus primarily on advising on and ensuring compliance with international privacy laws, providing legal support to the hospital's Privacy Office, and providing legal support to internal hospital departments and affiliated entities on corporate law matters.


This role will report to the General Counsel, with primary accountability for privacy related matters to the Director of Risk Management & Privacy.


Here's What You'll Get To Do:

  • Provide advice on and support compliance with privacy legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other international privacy laws and regulations
  • Provide legal support to the hospital's Privacy Office, including advice on investigating and managing privacy incidents and privacy impact assessments
  • Monitor changes to privacy law relevant to the Hospital, and communicate developments/implications to management and staff, as appropriate
  • Identify, address and manage legal needs in support of the Hospital's business and strategic objectives through effective factfinding, research and the provision of high quality legal advice and in a manner that reflects the organization's risk tolerance
  • Review, draft and negotiate contracts
  • Identify potential areas of legal risk/opportunity and make recommendations on risk tolerance and mechanisms to manage risk/opportunity
  • Support the General Counsel, as well as senior management and leaders across the Hospital, in implementing strategic and operational initiatives
  • Develop strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate ongoing communication throughout the organization, to anticipate and proactively manage legal needs and risks, and to keep current on best practices and emerging trends in legal practice within relevant sectors

Essential Requirements

  • You must possess a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctorate and be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • A strong understanding of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Personal Health Information Protection Act, and other privacy legislation
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
  • Experience in health law
  • Strong conceptual thinking and decisionmaking skills; proven ability to manage a high volume of competing priorities
  • A team player with excellent diplomacy and interpersonal skills

Assets

  • Five years postcall experience in private practice, inhouse, or a combination thereof, with a focus on privacy law
  • Experience working within a hospital or other healthcare sector organization

Employment Type

  • Permanent fulltime, 35 hours per week, Monday
