    We are looking for a Health & Safety Coordinator for the health and safety team supporting our Walker Aggregates Division - Niagara.

    Reporting directly to the Health & Safety Manager, you will coordinate the health and safety processes within Walker Aggregates to ensure that all employees are working safely and are adequately trained to perform their job safely and effectively. You will motivate and promote safe attitudes and behaviours consistent with our Superior Safety Culture through field-level worker engagement (approximately 80% in the field).

    What you will do in this role:

    Health and Safety Program Implementation and Site Maintenance (60%):

    1. Promote and reinforce superior safety culture initiatives throughout the company to ensure work is being completed safely while adhering to ministry standards and company policies.
    2. Perform weekly on-site inspections/observations and audit physical conditions of site location, compile results, assign corrective actions and communicate the results to highlight areas for improvement. Follow up on concerns and corrective action completion.
    3. Evaluate and identify hazards through facilitation and promotion of the hazard pyramid tools including the Safety Management System, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, Standard Operating Procedures, Field Level Hazard Assessments and Take 5 Smile cards.
    4. Assist site management in conducting thorough Incident Investigations, determining root causes and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are assigned. Ensure preliminary reports and notifications are submitted on time.
    5. Conduct annual audits to ensure compliance, conformance and best practices are being followed. Develop Corrective Action Plans in consultation with site management and track completion of actions.

    Training and Communication/ Networking and Relationships (40%)

    1. Deliver new corporate safety initiatives and programs.
    2. Deliver Start-Up corporate messaging and/or facilitate Reset sessions to move the Superior Safety Culture forward.
    3. Provide support and mentoring to the Joint Health & Safety Committee for the locations you support by attending meetings and conducting workplace inspections as prescribed.
    4. Provide quality communications at the site level through Safety Talks, Post-Incident Reset Messaging and Safety Alerts.
    5. Provide support for the worker compensation claims management process to ensure claim costs are controlled and the return to work program is effectively implemented.
    6. Respond to general questions or concerns related to safety policies and procedures.

    Qualifications

    • A two-year college diploma, College Occupational Health and Safety certificate or equivalent level of education.
    • Greater than one year experience in Occupational Health and Safety.
    • First Aid/CPR training is an asset.
    • You must possess a valid Driver's License in order to travel to various work sites.

    You will stand out if:

    • You have experience working in a mining environment.
    • You have WHMIS and Adult learning theory.
    • You have experience dealing with WSIB claims and injury management.
    • You have experience working around heavy equipment.
    • You have experience using EHS Software.
    • Certificates in CRST or CRSP are considered an asset.

    Skills/Knowledge/Experience Required

    This position requires a demonstrated degree of initiative and judgment in order to organize and prioritize daily tasks. Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are required in dealing with colleagues in everyday working relationships.

    • Knowledge of legislative requirements of multiple jurisdictions as well as best practices.
    • Business acumen - demonstrated understanding of quality standards relative to health and safety initiatives.
    • Able to work with limited supervision and to take discretionary action as required, exercise solid judgement in unusual circumstances.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook
    • Proficient communication skills, both oral and written, to disseminate information with clarity, in one-on-one or group situations, or over the telephone.
    • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with associates and senior management.
    • Thorough - makes sure work is done correctly and thoroughly, attentive to details, keeps accurate records.
    • Proactive - anticipates and initiates action to meet needs.
    • Adaptable - able to work with diverse personalities and styles.
