In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $67,095 - $111,831

Department summary

The Dean of Students supports all students — undergraduate and graduate — in the pursuit of academic and personal success. The Dean of Students collaborates with faculties, offices, and services across all campuses to deliver effective programming and provides leadership on university policies and initiatives.

The Office of the Dean of Students coordinates many services that strive to create diverse and inclusive support in all stages of the student experience, including:
academic resources, career and professional development health & wellness services, and community resources.


First Peoples' House (FPH) operates under the Dean of Students and reports directly to the assistant dean, First Nation, Métis and Inuit students.

First Peoples' House provides an environment of empowerment for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) learners to achieve personal and academic growth.

Respectful of the teachings of Wahkohtowin (kinship) in the understanding that we are all related.

The teaching is that we are to be mindful and respectful of each other as we journey Mother Earth together.

Our vision is to demonstrate our commitment to the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit student community on campus and provide diverse support that reflects this responsibility.

We will continue to honor a continuous ceremony of learning guided by our traditional teachings, and respecting the spirit of our ancestors and for all who came before us.

Our cultural teachings and collective responsibility asks us to consider the impacts we might have on the futures of the next seven generations of FNMI learners,
researchers, and future leaders who have yet to make the U of A their home.



Position summary


Reporting directly to the assistant dean, First Nation, Métis and Inuit students, the position makes culturally appropriate and overall administrative decisions that impact the operation and reputation of First Peoples' House and FNMI student experience.

As a member of the Dean of Students leadership council, the position provides expert advice and counsel to key decision makers.

FPH is a part of a larger organization of student services and presents cultural complexity and unique importance to the mission of the University and the First Peoples' House Strategic Plan and therefore requires professional level management and a high level cultural competency to operate successfully.


Duties

Leadership/ Culture:


  • Understands the importance of team building of crossfunctional programming that shapes the culture of the whole team in a positive and effective way.
  • Understands the importance of protocols, ceremonies and traditional teachings for cultural knowledge to be the foundation of the work with FPH.
  • Is mindful of the importance of relationship building to create and maintain authentic positive engagement with Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers (TKK) through the development of cultural programming and support for students as well as community connections on and off campus, community leaders, and senior leaders on campus.

Strategic Influencer

  • Contributes cultural expertise and insight to the development of holistic programming for FPH.
  • Champions cultural development as proactive strategies or initiatives as it pertains to the overall success of FPH.
  • Is accountable for embedding and demonstrating equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) into all aspects of FPH from the physical space, staffing and the programs and
