The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range:
$65,701- $72,440
starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.


Performance range:
starting salary to max of $85,446
is available through annual performance increases.

  • Job SummaryReporting to the Manager, Marketing and Communications, the Social Media and News Coordinator will work closely with UC+M staff and stakeholders across campus to centrally coordinate the adaptation and distribution of the UVic's key institutional stories across the university's central communications channels.


This position will create or adapt content for the various channels including social media for targeted audiences as an important and regular part of their work.


This position will be responsible for the UVic website news management system and for posting and coordinating content assets within this platform, and for providing technical and standards based news management system training and support for its use where required.

A periodic review of the system and recommendations for improvements (including a potential replacement) of this system, as well as their implementation are also within the scope of this role.


This position will engage UC+M leadership in the development and implementation of a strategic distribution plan for story content across the university's central communications channels.

To support this plan, this position will coordinate editorial and technical development of story content.

This position will also identify distribution channels in consultation with UC+M leadership; make recommendations for placement of story content, and the coordination of placement with the designated UC+M staff for each channel.


This position will also create or adapt content for the various channels as an important and regular part of their work.


This position will work with department staff to engage communications officers across faculties and units to make content distribution recommendations in alignment with the university's strategic priorities.


This position will play a role in UVic's emergency response network by providing support to utilize any of UVic's communications channels to alert and notify our stakeholders in the event of an emergency or crisis.


This position plays an integral role in UC+M's mandate to communicate UVic's vision and strategic objectives, and to promote and protect UVic's brand as one of Canada's leading research-intensive universities.

They focus on the university's expertise, accomplishments and community engagement, represented through the university's positioning components and research communications strategy, to position UVic as one of Canada's leading research-intensive universities.


  • Job RequirementsThis position requires a Bachelor's degree in Communications (or related degree), or experience in a related field and four years of experience in internet technologies development and customer service.

Experience requirements include:

  • Project management
  • Popular social media platforms and enterprise dashboards
  • HTML/XHTML, CSS, web program scripting familiarity
  • Complex content management systems and related technical infrastructure
  • Creation of social media content
Equivalent combinations of training, education and/or experience may be considered.


Competencies include:

  • Can confidently edit and write for different audiences and digital media
  • Ability to synthesize complex material and write plain language content for a general audience across multiple platforms
  • Has a strong understanding of a variety of social platforms and emerging types of digital media in order to coordinate the most impactful digital media distribution strategy for multiple audiences
  • Ability to motivate creative and technical staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and promotional skills
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Ability to make decisions quickly and appropriately
