About us:

The Emerging & Pandemic Infections Consortium (EPIC) is a collaborative University of Toronto (U of T) Institutional Strategic Initiative (ISI) uniting 6 major research institutions (Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, SickKids, Sunnybrook Research Institute, Unity Health Toronto, University Health Network, and U of T) in a broad partnership to advance research and training in the area of infectious diseases.

These globally-leading institutions will make adifference to preventing the next pandemic.

Building on our momentum in combatting the SARS-CoV-2 virus, EPIC will marshal the advanced research infrastructure and the world-renowned research and training expertise of our partner institutions to allow an integrated, innovative response to infectious diseases.

The four pillars of EPIC's work includes:

  • _Training & Talent Development_: EPIC will offer immersive and cross-disciplinary training to a diverse cohort of talent in infectious diseases. Hundreds of researchers, clinicians and lab staff will gain access to leading-edge technologies, develop the skills to turn discovery into solutions, and connect Canada to global networks of pandemic surveillance and response. We will help propel a new generation of infectious disease research leaders.
-
_Transformative research_: EPIC will foster opportunities for networking, cross-connection and integration of multiple scientific disciplines to address infectious diseases. Through targeted funding to facilitate novel collaborative research projects, regular seminars and symposia to share research and amplification of research outputs and impacts, EPIC will accelerate innovation in interventions and preventions for infectious diseases
-
_Knowledge Translation_: EPIC will expand the role of our institutional partners as knowledge brokers. It will provide commercialization training and connection to industry partners to support our members in the development of novel therapeutics, interventions, diagnostics and vaccines. New researchers at EPIC will be equipped to explain bench science to decision-makers and the public, as well as to translate discoveries into made-in
  • Canada products and solutions to global health challenges.
-
_Infrastructure_: EPIC aims to support infectious disease research by helping to provide access to cutting-edge technologies and research facilities. Chief among these is the Toronto High Containment Facility (THCF), Toronto's only Combined Containment Level 3 (C-CL3) facility for research of high-risk and emerging human pathogens has been critical infrastructure for our community to contribute to the understanding of many pathogens, including HIV, the bacteria that causestuberculosis, SARS-1, SARS-CoV-2. It has also provided the lab space to develop therapeutics and treatments for those infections and served as a central component to the research response to SARS-CoV-2 for many academic, governmental and industrial partners. EPIC is leading the development efforts for a revitalized and expanded THCF to expand and continue work on emerging human health threats to ensure that we are prepared for future pandemics.
