Illustration within the Audain Faculty of Art. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.

  • The Illustration area at Emily Carr University focuses on developing criticallyengaged and contextually aware illustration work for a variety of fields. Situated within the interdisciplinary Visual Arts BFA in the Audain Faculty of Art, the Illustration area fosters the development of students as makers of visual culture, at the forefront of contemporary art production. With an emphasis on strong technical and conceptual foundation, and a keen awareness of the relationship between meaning, story, and image, the Illustration degree guides students through a range of illustration fields, disciplines, and practices. Our department features a digital lab of computers paired with Wacom Cintiq monitors, a digital printing center, with access to a range of facilities including dry media and painting studios, and a purposebuilt print media studio that supports work in letterpress, book arts, relief and screenprinting.

Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
***- MFA or equivalent graduate degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • An awareness of the complexities of local, regional, and global cultures and competence in their social interplay.
  • An understanding of the field of illustration as a community of visual culturemakers.
  • Professional experience in a range of illustration fields, with an ability to integrate and assess traditional, experimental, and digital illustration techniques.
  • Strong evidence of excellence in illustration practice that may include hybrid and/or expanded artworks that go beyond industryoriented illustration fields, such as: artwork for exhibitions, social engagement, public art, collaborative projects, selfpublication, and other areas of inquiry.
  • Demonstrated engagement with illustration in the broader field, including illustration in the global arthistorical context, and experience with regional and global illustration groups, societies, competitions, and conventions.
  • An understanding of the full spectrum of illustration genres and areas of focus, as well as the broad extent of art economies (commercial, gallerybased, collective, public, socially engaged, etc.), translating into an ability to broaden students' perspectives along these lines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in the following areas will be considered an asset:
  • Ecologically sustainable and socially conscious approaches and methods.
  • A practice that decentralizes colonial traditions in illustration and their social frameworks.
  • The ability to integrate both new and traditional tools, media and methods into illustration curriculum, including emerging technologies and new digital illustration formats.
