Position Summary

As part of the Faculty of Engineering's E-IDEA (Engineering Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity Advancement) initiative, the Community Engagement Program grows collaborations with McGill faculty, staff, students, and external community partners to embed values of community building and positive social impact in the engineering, architecture, and urban planning professions

The Community Engagement Research Assistant 1 works collaboratively with the E-IDEA team to investigate systemic barriers to accessing and thriving in Higher Education and to contribute recommended practices for integrating science communication, principles of social sustainability, and community outreach in engineering education.

The overall aim of the research is to build capacity within engineering education to meaningfully engage underrepresented youth in STEM.

Tasks and Duties

Under the supervision of the E-IDEA Manager and with the guidance of the Research Assistant 2, the Research Assistant 1 participates in the following:

  • Continuous learning: Staying abreast of new developments in EDI, accessibility, STEM outreach, and STEM education. Investigating and updating approaches to holistic STEM training as informed by social sustainability research.
  • Research dissemination: Participating in conferences and academic networks to share program outcomes, knowledge, and practices. Conducting literature reviews and contributing to academic publications.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in STEM education or another relevant discipline with community work experience
Other Qualifying Skills & Abilities

  • Strong foundation in intersectional education and applied principles of social equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility
  • At least two years of demonstrated experience effectively engaging and collaborating with diverse populations
  • Advanced facilitation and communication skills, including experience leading online and hybrid sessions over Zoom
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and citation management software (e.g., EndNote) for managing data, presentations, and other documentation
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to balance independent and collaborative tasks
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 (Advanced) on a scale of 04.

Hourly Salary:
$28.50
