The Organization

The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is a community-based, non-share capital corporation that operates, manages, maintains, and invests in the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and affiliate businesses.

Operating on a multi-site property, the WAA is responsible for airport operations, security, facilities, parking, ground transportation and communications.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Cybersecurity & IT Infrastructure, the Server/Infrastructure Administrator is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and management of WAA's system and server infrastructure.

The Server/Infrastructure Administrator will provide technical expertise in all areas of server and system infrastructure while working with the IT team to design, configure, maintain, support and optimize all new and existing server hardware and communication systems hosted on-premises and on the cloud.


Responsibilities include:


  • Perform daytoday server infrastructure administration tasks, including software and license renewal, managing onpremises & cloud services, Virtual Machines (VMs), Active Directory (AD), user/group administration, security permissions, group policies, investigate event log warnings and errors, resource monitoring, general infrastructure and user support and other miscellaneous IT tasks;
  • Implement scheduled server equipment & Operating System (OS) updates, refreshes, and maintenance tasks;
  • Implement the backup/restore and scaled disaster recovery programs, and documenting related procedures;
  • Work with various internal groups to communicate IT & client priorities and concerns, resolve issues, and ensure ontime delivery of solutions. Propose corrective actions to prevent recurrence of issues;
  • Work with IT and business stakeholders on projects related to the design, installation, and maintenance of server infrastructure;
  • Administer system monitoring software and respond to system alerts as required;
  • Participate in Oncall rotation;
  • Manage the database environments by ensuring that storage, archiving backup and recovery procedures are functional;
  • Monitor the database environments, identify performance, trends and develop meaningful reporting, metrics and trending documentation to develop action plans;
  • Write project documentation, including design specifications, and produce test plans; and
  • Responding to and resolving database access and performance issues.

Selection Criteria include:


  • Certificate or degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience;
  • Five (5) years of experience in a server/infrastructure administrator or related position, including: system administration, upgrades and patching, backup/restore, capacity planning, performance tuning, onprem & cloud security, disaster recovery;
  • Thorough understanding of Microsoft's enterprise technology platform, including Azure, Active Directory, Structured Query Language (SQL), Office365, and the Windows server and desktop operating systems;
  • Advanced knowledge of network protocols (e.g., IPv4/IPv6/TCP/UDP/DNS/HTTP);
  • Proficiency with Windows PowerShell, Python, or Unix shell scripting;
  • Experience in database administration, optimization, and automating Database Administrator (DBA) tasks;
  • Experience with VMWare and Microsoft SQL preferred;
  • Strong writing skills, as well as the ability to articulate ITrelated concepts to a broad range of technical and nontechnical staff;
  • Experience with problem/incident response; and
  • Experience with developing infrastructure metrics and creating reports.
