    Job Title: Mechanical/Mining Engineering Co-op Student

    Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world.

    The Resource Management Group is a corporate group providing support to all operations and projects across Base Metals. Our main purpose is the technical verification and certification of mineral resource, mineral reserve and exploration target estimates and reports for Vale Base Metals, ensuring governance and compliance reporting to internal and external regulatory codes.

    The Opportunity

    We are currently seeking a 2 Mechanical/Mining Engineering Co-op Student for September 2024 to join our VTDL Mining group based in Sudbury, ON. This is an 8–12-month position working on site at the North Atlantic Operation Center and our Mine sites.

    As a Mechanical/Mining Engineering Co-op, you will have the opportunity to participation in mining technology trial development, execution, reporting, and gaining hands-on experience in the mining industry. Types of technology would include but not limited to autonomous equipment, electric equipment and mining development equipment testing.

    In this position, you will:

    1. Technology Trial Participation:
      • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to understand the purpose and objectives of technology trials.
      • Assist in the selection and implementation of innovative technologies within the mining context.
      • Attend trial meetings, workshops, and field visits to gain practical insights.
    2. Trial Plan Development:
      • Work alongside experienced engineers to create trial plans, including defining objectives, success criteria, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
      • Develop detailed schedules, resource allocation, and risk assessments for each trial.
    3. Coordination Support:
      • Assist in coordinating trial logistics, including equipment procurement, personnel allocation, and safety protocols.
      • Liaise with cross-functional teams (operations, maintenance, and safety) to ensure seamless trial execution.
    4. Job Observation:
      • Conduct on-site observations during trial periods.
      • Document trial activities, collect data, and identify any deviations from the planned procedures.
      • Monitor trial progress and address any issues promptly.
    5. Report Writing:
      • Compile comprehensive reports summarizing trial outcomes, including performance metrics, challenges encountered, and lessons learned.
      • Present findings to the engineering team and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

    About You

    Education:

    • Currently enrolled as a student in a Bachelor's in Engineering (Co-Op) Program.
      • Concentration in (Mechanical or Mining Engineering) is preferred.

    Experience:

    • Previous experience in a mining industry is considered an asset

    Skills:

    • Solid verbal, written and analytical communication skills.
    • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite – particularly Excel.
    • Proven time management and organization skills.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal and facilitation skills.
    • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
