Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world and from all walks of life.


The Opportunity:


The Employment Team helps prepare newcomers to transition to the Canadian labour force by providing pre-employment training, workshops, and networking opportunities.

The team also helps newcomers access to volunteer, internship, part-time and full-time employment opportunities.


The
Employment Language Trainer works closely with the Employment Trainer to develop and deliver an employment-related curriculum to newcomer clients at the Y Newcomer Connections Centre.

They have either high-level or low-level English skills.

This position develops and delivers English language curriculum to support the team's programs and workshops and provides learning and curriculum development support on other projects undertaken by the team.

Y Newcomer Connections has been providing employment-related services for newcomers at our organization for the last eight years.

Through these years, we have addressed different needs of the community forging long-lasting relationships with employers, community organizations, and different levels of government.

Our programming includes short-term hours) and long-term (8 weeks - 10 months) interventions to help newcomers access the local labour market.


Responsibilities:


  • Research, develop and deliver employmentrelated language curricula and instructional materials and activities for a range of professional fields, relying on the Canadian Language Benchmarks, to support the training and workshops offered by the Employment Team and other partners.
  • Prepare and deliver classes using the employmentrelated language learning materials.
  • Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each employmentrelated training course.
  • Become familiar with the Canadian Language Benchmarks to carry out objectives and outcomes in daily lesson plans and modules.
  • Become familiar with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) to chart learners' progress.
  • Facilitate groupbased learning activities for participants, including the use of technology in the classroom and online/remote learning when required.
  • Provide routine progress reports for participants.
  • Collaborate with the Employer Liaison and with local employer partners.
  • Record clients' daily attendance.
  • Will ensure that client records are maintained, including clients' achievement and program attendance record, in the Y Newcomer Connections CRM database and iCare database, as directed by your Supervisor.
  • Inform Supervisor or Team Lead of issues in a timely manner.
  • Help maintain a clean classroom following SAM Standards.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings.
  • Identify and participate in appropriate professional development opportunities as approved by the GM, Newcomer Connections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • Teaching experience
  • TESL/TESOL/TEFL Certification preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in a crosscultural environment
  • Approachable and possessing a solid clientcentric attitude
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of newcomer adult learners (18+)
  • A strong interest in and/or experience in developing curriculum for employmentrelated training
  • Knowledge of the use of technology for education (Microsoft 365 suite, LMS, Remote learning, SmartBoard. Etc.)
  • Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of other languages is an asset
  • Adaptability and willingness to take on new challenges
