Manager, Academic Lab Program, BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning:

Primary Purpose:

The Manager, BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning, provides overall oversight of the operation of the WCVM academic lab program of the Centre including direct supervision of BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning staff; prioritizing and addressing emerging Centre issues in consultation with the Associate Dean, Academic, faculty and staff.


Nature of Work:
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic, the Manager works closely with the Simulation Program Manager.

Work is deadline oriented, and the Manager will be required to demonstrate professional judgement to ensure the smooth development and delivery of simulation and clinical skills sessions.

A variety of issues will require discretionary decision making.

Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to ensure that productive and positive relationships are developed and maintained with faculty, staff, and students.

This position works across several laboratory environments with competing needs and deadlines and requires the ability to prioritize work. Tact, diplomacy, flexibility, organizational skills, and good judgement are imperative to the success of the incumbent. An understanding of veterinary education and the needs of the profession is essential.


Key Accountabilities:

Manages and oversees the day-to-day operations of the BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning including, ensuring adequate inventory of supplies and equipment, lab scheduling, workflow and staff assignments and scheduling

  • Effectively manages the full employee lifecycle of direct reports, including but not limited to recruitment, training and development, engagement, performance management and discipline
  • Works collaboratively with the Simulation Program Manager to understand course requirements and educational goals and appropriately assign lab personnel and material resources to fulfill course objectives In collaboration with the Program Manager, evaluates and restructures teaching lab needs in collaboration with WCVM faculty and as guided by the DVM curriculum Develops and manages financial resources for the BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning, ensuring that resources are used effectively and transparently
  • As necessary, actively and effectively teaches veterinary clinical skills to DVM students alongside faculty and staff
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Academic, contributes to the strategic planning activities for the BJ Hughes Centre for Clinical Learning and WCVM
  • Coordinates the assessment of operational plans and metrics involving data collection and analysis, for quality, accountability, budget and resource planning, and to ensure the WCVM is meeting accreditation objectives
  • Coordinates WCVM supported events outside of the DVM curriculum such as student club workshops, CatSnip programs, police dog program CPR program and others
  • Keeps up to date on innovations and best practices in the areas of veterinary education, leadership, management, and human resources.
  • Works collaboratively, builds and maintains relationships with external simulation centers within Canada and internationally.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:
A DVM or RVT or Bachelor's degree in a health science discipline is required. If the latter, a Master's degree is preferred. Licensure with the SVMA for DVM or RVT or other healthcare professional body is strongly preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered.


Experience:

A minimum of two years progressive and related leadership experience in the area of managing a fast-paced teaching laboratory and three to five years' experience in a post-secondary educational environment.

Experience with program development, performance evaluations, human resources and financial management, policy and procedure development and team building is essential.

Simulation laboratory experience and experience in modelling and use of IT for video capture would be considered a strong asset.


Skills:
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrate good judgement and integrity. Ability to prioritize work and manage competing deadlines. Strong organizational skills are a requirement of this position, as is the ability to work effectively in a team.
