Overview:


Sustainability and environmental management in the building and construction materials sector are critical to responding to today's climate crisis and in consideration of the valuation of corporations.

The Sustainability & Environment Manager has the ability to make a significant difference through the actions of Canada's largest building and construction material company.

Going beyond the management of emissions and energy to encompass the circular economy, using waste as fuel and innovative management of waste products, the management of water and biodiversity that adds value to ecosystems, and building relationships with people and communities that demonstrate Lafarge's commitment to building better cities, for people and the planet.

Lafarge has a robust sustainability strategy, and this role will play a key implementation role in ensuring its fulfillment, in addition to working with local operations in identifying meaningful and innovative approaches to our business that have localized impact.

Working alongside a team of professionals that manage the whole of Western Canada as well as businesses in the Pacific Northwest, this position will have influence to shape and deliver initiatives and programs while also making a difference through the direct management of operations within the Sustainability and Environment department for the Northern Alberta market area.

Reporting to the Head of Sustainability and Environment, Western Canada, this position optimizes sustainability and environmental management practices throughout the Northern Alberta region.


  • This is a management position requiring technical aptitude and strategic planning capabilities, providing guidance to the Aggregates, Concrete Readymix, Pipe, Precast, Asphalt and Construction product lines' operational efforts and projects to ensure compliance with environmental, legal, and Lafarge requirements, as well as the advancement of sustainability programs and stakeholder engagement. The position supports development of a culture focused on excellence and effective environmental management, sustainability, and robust stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities:


Health, Safety and Environment

  • Demonstrates a commitment to a safe work environment; understands the safety objectives of the organization and supports these efforts in a visible manner
  • Support in the development and implementation of annual HS & E Programs
  • Support operations in achieving and maintaining compliance with legal and internal requirements
  • Advise Senior Management and the Head of Sustainability of key changes in regulatory and legal requirements, as well as changes in industry standards or codes of practice
  • Keep current with all federal, provincial, regional and local environmental legal requirements and monitor developments and changes, assisting management in advocating for Lafarge's interests in these matters
  • Develop, implement and deliver environmental training programs for operations
  • Perform environmental inspections, audits, and investigations in partnership with operations; participate in the corporate audit program
  • Work with operations to ensure environmental liabilities and issues are identified, managed and reported for all Lafarge properties
  • Lead and report on the environmental elements of the due diligence process for acquisitions and divestments as required
  • Manage direct reports within the NAB Sustainability and Environment team, including mentoring of junior members
