Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellness, the Respectful Workplace Advisor will:

  • Assist individuals and groups in making informed decisions about the most appropriate method of resolving a concern or complaint in accordance with the Policy on Conflict Resolution and the Prevention and Resolution of Harassment and Discrimination.
  • Receive, coordinate and facilitate the informal resolution of concerns and complaints in accordance with best practices in organizational conflict management.
  • Counsel and advise complainants, respondents, supervisors and others who may be affected in the course of resolving complaints.
  • Keep statistics and compile appropriate reports including the creation of an annual report.
  • Provide appropriate and targeted education and training initiatives on Respectful Workspaces and Conflict Resolution to students, faculty and staff whilst being aware of legal imperatives to have effective educational programs that support relevant policies and/or collective agreements.
  • Provide advice, support and coaching to Supervisors / Managers / Departmental Chairs about their supervisory responsibilities in relation to Respectful Workplaces and Conflict Resolution.
  • Play a key role in outreach and education directly linked to Respectful Workplaces and Conflict Resolution, building strong relationships both within and outside the university community.
  • In accordance with the University policy on Legal Resources
  • Retention of External Counsel, liaise with Senior Director Legal Services as required, through appropriate reporting relationships within People & Culture.
  • Recommend changes in existing policy; develop draft proposals and initiate processes to formulate new policy in direct consultation with the Conflict Resolution Advisory Committee as well as the Director, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellness, Director, Employee Experience, and the Associate Vice President, People & Culture.

Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Respectful Workplace Advisor you will have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Certification from a recognized conflict management program that reflects a minimum of 200 hours specialized training in conflict resolution with an emphasis on organizational conflict management.
  • Current knowledge of harassment and discrimination issues in accordance with Federal and Provincial Human Rights Legislation.
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of direct experience in respectful workplaces and/or organizational conflict management with a demonstrated record of successfully resolving organizational disputes, including multiparty, multilateral conflicts.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Proven experience in handling highly sensitive issues in a complex environment, with a commitment to maintain confidentiality and neutrality required.
  • Experience in the design and delivery of educational programs in the areas of Respectful Workplaces and Conflict Resolution.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, the demonstrated ability to build rapport with various stakeholders, motivate people, diffuse escalating situations, and generally put people at ease.
  • Computer competency essential (Microsoft Office).
  • Experience working in a unionized environment preferred.
  • Experience working with different stakeholder groups in a postsecondary environment an asset.
  • Training in intercultural competencies an asset.
  • Track record of engagement in one or more diverse communities an asset.
