The Investing in Women's Futures (IWF) Program aims to ensure women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Individuals who experience social and economic barriers stabilize their lives and embark on a path to healing and wellness and gain the skills needed to gain economic self-sufficiency and security.

We are seeking a Counsellor - Gender-Based Violence, who will report to the Manager, Career & Loans Services. The individual who meets the job requirements will be recruited for the IWF program at Achev. This position will provide support, advocacy, referral, and assistance to women, 2SLGBTQQIA+ and non-binary individuals who have experienced violence.

This position is responsible for providing safety planning, supportive counselling, and provision of legal rights workshops and resources, outreach and education, and planning and facilitating support group sessions for survivors.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Complete intakes for individual and transitional counselling
  • Carry a caseload of women providing individual counselling
  • Provide therapeutic shortterm, solutionfocused, and transitional counselling
  • Assist women in carrying out their action plans by identifying challenges, assessing progress, and providing strategies to resolve difficulties in reaching their goals.
  • Assist women with safety planning.
  • Provide information about and referrals to community resources
  • Advocate for services on behalf of individual women
  • Maintain statistics and other records
  • Participate in program planning and evaluation
  • Liaise with representatives of relevant community agencies/services
  • Other duties may be required as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Registered with the appropriate regulatory body
  • University Degree in a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in the areas of genderbased violence and social assistance systems
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a nonprofit or community health center environment is a definite asset.
  • Experience with intake procedures, case management, and crisis intervention;

Skills and Abilities:


  • Excellent knowledge of violence against women issues, justice and social assistance systems, community agencies/resources, the mental health system, child protection, family law, immigrant and refugee issues, and legislative issues
  • Extensive experience working within an Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppressive and genderbased violence framework
  • Teamwork, cooperating and collaboration skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with community agencies and groups
  • Strong computer skills (i.e., MS Office)
  • Able to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent crisis intervention, mediation and active listening skills


This role is hybrid at this time - working a minimum of 2 days in the office but can change in the future as per Funder and Organisation policy.
