Position Overview
The
Department of Marketing and Communications in the
Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Regular
Communications Advisor.


The Communications Advisor reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications and draws on a strong background of project management and strategic communications to provide support to the Faculty of Science's Director of Marketing and Communications and event coordinators.

The Communications Advisor assists in the development of both long and short-term strategies to raise the profile of the Faculty of Science.

The Advisor creates internal and external communications which include print and digital materials related to all areas within the faculty, in cooperation with the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Deans, Directors, managers and event coordinators.

The incumbent is a proactive leader and must make decisions and/or recommendations that have the potential to significantly impact the public profile of the Faculty and the university as a whole.

This is a generalist position with a broad range of focus areas and target audiences.

The incumbent is required to meet multiple, simultaneous deadlines throughout the year and must manage competing interests with satisfactory outcomes for all involved.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Effectively managing projects on time, on budget and aligned with strategic communication goals.
  • Developing highquality communication materials with timely, relevant, accurate and creative content.
  • Targeting content appropriately to many different audiences.
  • Developing and implementing an effective and focused communications plan with a variety of initiatives to promote and raise the profile of the Faculty in consultation with departments and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Working in conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Communications on the development and implementation of strategic, internal and external communication plans.
  • Working in a team environment with the events coordinators to provide communications and marketing support on faculty sponsored events (Orientation, Open House, Lecture Series, etc.).
  • Researching and writing news stories and releases and submitting to various university publications.
  • Conducting a periodic review of all Science websites and works with web systems specialist to ensure content is up to date.
  • Overseeing the production, printing, and delivery of publications.

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • A related university degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the communications, public relations and/or journalism fields with an emphasis on creating, writing and editing internal/external communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit and proofread at an advanced level in the English language with impeccable accuracy in grammar, spelling and content verification.
  • Expertise in creating compelling communication pieces for a wide variety of audiences using multiple communication vehicles.
  • Communications experience in a large complex organization is a strong asset.
  • Excellent research and interview skills.
  • Proficiency in writing full stories, converting written articles/media releases into various formats as well as expertise in copywriting for brochures and annual reports.
  • Basic videography skills and ability to use digital SLR camera and multimedia communications (photographs, podcasts, social networking technologies).
  • Strong attention to detail.
