A Brief Summary of This Position:

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Electrician is responsible for assisting with special projects in Production such as troubleshooting Production issues, R & D and as well performing and supporting building and equipment maintenance repairs.

The Maintenance Electrician is required to work weekends and be on-call on a rotating basis to support 24- hour production, as needed.

The incumbent assists with new installations of equipment, troubleshoots, and carries out common repairs and replacements for plant production equipment.

The employee performs highly skilled technical work in areas of installation, maintenance, repair of electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment with a wide knowledge and high degree of proficiency.

The employee carries out installation of distribution equipment including disconnects, conduits and cables in accordance with the ESA standards (Electrical Safety Authority).

The types of equipment serviced and maintained include cranes, forklifts, safety devices, furnaces, ventilation, and water treatment equipment.

Apart from general house cleaning tasks, The Maintenance Electrician also performs general responsibilities such as the reporting of abnormal conditions and safety hazards.

The incumbent will also occasionally be in charge of different industrial lifting equipment and is expected to operate all the hoists and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner.


Essential Functions:


  • Ensure that safety codes and ESA standards are followed and perform maintenance on buildings, machinery, and tools.
  • Ensure compliance for all company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshoots problems with electronic, electrical, & mechanical systems or products and presents solutions to management.
  • Assists in developing and testing new products, processes, and procedures and adjusts equipment to ensure quality production is met.
  • Develops and maintains a high degree of technical knowledge concerning industry, equipment, and products.
  • Electrical and electronic as well as hydraulic & pneumatic troubleshooting.
  • Other common functions to learn are dropping power to a machine and replacing proximity switches.
  • Install low voltage electrical equipment per ESA, CCOHS and Valmont Safety Standards and make decisions to ensure ESA compliance.
  • Decide whether equipment can run or needs immediate attention for repairs.
  • Shares knowledge and experience with other employees to improve process and support 5S Implementation.
  • Work well with others team members to support production on time project completion.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks or be trained in new work scope.
  • Able to develop equipment Preventive Maintenance procedures and responsible for daily, weekly, monthly completion.
  • Support or take a lead on equipment installation.

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Responsible for hand tools, electrical tools, volt/ohm and amp meters and other testing equipment, welders, lifting equipment.
  • Required to take considerable care and attention on the part of the employee to minimize damage to gauges, tools, and equipment.
  • Demonstrates commitment to safety and a willingness to take personal responsibility for safety is required.
  • Responsible for maintaining the work area in a safe condition.
  • Preuse checklists will be filled out by the employee for forklifts and other material handling equipment.
  • Lockout/tagout procedures are mandatory.
  • Work alongside a lesserskilled technician; In this case, the employee needs to take care that the lesserskilled technician is working safely and correctly.
  • Employee operates as a member of the team, but not as a lead.
  • High School Diploma or equivalency, and education in an Electrical discipline
  • The ability to climb and work at elevated heights of up to 30 feet.
  • The ability to work over ten hours a week in overtime when required for business needs.
  • 24 years of previous experience maintaining industrial equipment.
  • The ability to accurately interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and Canadian Electrical Code / ESA codes for both AC & DC electrical systems.
  • One year of previous experience using industrial lifting equipment, cranes, or hoists.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Experience welding and fabricating.
  • Selfstarter requiring a minimum of supervision and direction.
