Reporting to the Director, Legal Counsel, Western Canada, the successful candidate will provide legal services to our Loblaw Real Estate business groups throughout Western Canada, with a primary focus on British Columbia. The successful candidate will be a part of our small team that provides legal support for all real estate matters in Western Canada, consisting of two lawyers and one law clerk. Loblaw offers an agile work environment, and this position can be located in either Vancouver or Calgary. Occasional travel will be required. The responsibilities of this position will include:Develop a strong understanding of Loblaw’s businesses;Review, negotiate and draft documents for various commercial real estate matters, including leases, offers, letters of intent, amendments, assignments, subleases, purchases, sales, easements, restrictive covenants and consents;Negotiate and draft documentation in relation to complex redevelopment projects that impact the operation of Loblaw grocery stores and pharmacies;Perform and summarize real estate/leasing due diligence;Provide advice, and draft and negotiate documentation for major projects and strategic initiatives that involve Loblaw’s real estate portfolio;Advise on expropriation matters, municipal/development work, and environmental matters;Conduct analysis and prepare legal opinions regarding the interpretation of various real property related legal documents;Advise business colleagues and draft correspondence in relation to landlord/tenant disputes; andManage and direct external counsel as necessary.What You’ll Need:Member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia;Excellent drafting and analytical skills;Excellent academic credentials;Excellent communication and negotiation skills;A strong ability to identify creative and practical solutions to legal and business issues;5-6 years post-call experience practicing in both commercial leasing and real estate transactions obtained at a major law firm or corporation;Experience in environmental and/or regulatory law is an asset;Membership in the Law Society of Alberta is an asset; andExperience working in-house or in a corporate environment is an asset.You are a person who:Makes connections with people and builds trust;Takes initiative and can work both independently and on a team;Has a professional demeanor;Pays strong attention to detail;Is comfortable in an agile and paperless environment; andCan meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.How You’ll Succeed:At Loblaw, we seek great people to continually strengthen our culture.
