Description
The Sea Lion Trainer Assistant is a junior staff member who will be assisting the Sea Lion Trainers in all aspects of the daily husbandry for the California Sea Lions, while learning the basics of animal behavior modification techniques.
The Sea Lion Trainer Assistant has a passionate interest in animal training as a long-term career.Primary Responsibilities:
- Cleaning the sea lion habitat, public show area, food preparation and storage areas.
- Preparing sea lion diets and foraging enrichment items for the sea lions.
- Maintaining outstanding cleaning standards of Sea lion food containers, fridges, and utensils.
- Preparing the Sea Lion Show Area and sound system for sea lion shows.
- Assisting the audience during the sea lion shows and taking pictures of our guest and sea lions.
- Assisting the Sea Lion Trainers during training sessions on land and in water.
- Assisting the Sea Lion Trainers on record keeping.
- Supervising the touch pools in the Sea Life Caverns and answering guest questions.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and overall appearance of all the Marine Life Facilities.
- Performing any other duties as requested.
Desired Qualifications:
- Outstanding communication skills: must be able to follow instructions and receive feedback.
- Able to read, understand and memorize educational material including scientific data.
- Possess a desire to become a Sea Lion Trainer. Keen interest in animal behavior.
- Eager to learn about animal behavior and training techniques to become and Animal Trainer as a career.
- Pursuing education in a relevant biological field or previous experience in an animal related field is an asset.
- Experience with public speaking and performing is an asset.
- An individual that is outgoing, selfmotivates, and a team player who can demonstrate outstanding guest service skills.
- SCUBA certification is an asset or the ability to go under SCUBA training.
Terms of Employment:
- This is a fulltime position that requires flexible availability including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to lift 50lb.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to work with fish and shellfish and work around pungent smells, animal fur, dandruff, and organics.
- Must be able to pass a basic security clearance.
- This is an entry level position which does not require previous experience. The wage will be based on applicant qualifications starting at $15.00 per hour.
