Description

Youth Employment Services Manitoba (YES Mantioba) is seeking a permanent full-time Post-Secondary Education Advisor to join our Futures Forward team. Futures Forward is a collaborative program between YES Manitoba, Community Financial Counselling Services, and Canadian Mental Health Association - Winnipeg and Manitoba that provides holistic, wrap-around transitional supports to youth ages 15 to 29 in or from care across Manitoba.


The Post-Secondary Education Advisor is a member of the education and career planning Futures Forward team and works closely with the Outreach Coordinator, Student Support Case Manager, and Employment Facilitator to provide education and career development support for current and former youth in care youth in or from care in Manitoba.


The Post-Secondary Education Advisor oversees the implementation of the Futures Forward Tuition Waiver Program and provides one-on-one post-secondary education counselling and support to program participants to increase post-secondary participation and completion, as well as support participants to transition to employment.


The Post-Secondary Education Advisor engages in regular community outreach and networking activities to promote Futures Forward programming, including education and career development programs and services.

Reporting to the Program Manager (Futures Forward), the Post-Secondary Education Advisor is responsible for:

Post-Secondary Education and Career Planning

  • Assist participants with education and career planning through oneonone appointments and case management activities to identify personal goals and interests related to career and postsecondary education.
  • Conduct client needs assessment and complete client intake assessments, as needed.
  • Help participants research, identify, and pursue programs and training, relevant to future goals, including adult education, vocational school, college and university.
  • Assist participants with accessing and identifying resources to pursue postsecondary education, including funding opportunities such as the Tuition Waiver program, sponsorship options, student aid, and scholarships/bursaries.
  • Provide support and information to participants to navigate and follow through with postsecondary admissions requirements.
  • Refer participants to relevant programs and education opportunities aligned with goals and interests; provide tools for participants to research and explore postsecondary education.
  • Provide referrals to other agencies in the community based on participant needs to support overall health and wellbeing.
  • Liaise with participants' social workers, guidance counsellors, teachers, and network of support to assist participant holistically in education and career planning.
  • Engage in follow up activities to ensure participants have ongoing support to execute education and career goals.
  • Participate in various bursary selection committees, as needed, such as Advancing Futures Bursary and Keith Cooper Scholarship.

Administration of the Tuition Waiver Program

  • Develop Tuition Waiver promotional materials and information sessions for aspiring students, educators, school administrators, support workers, service providers, and postsecondary intuitions.
  • Oversee data collection and management for all incoming Tuition Waiver applicants.
  • Liaise with Child and Family Services authorities to verify applicant care history and liaise with postsecondary institutions regarding institutional and programspecific requirements.
  • Refer Tuition Waiver applicants to additional supports as required (either to other Futures Forward staff, postsecondary contacts, or to external community supports).
  • Follow up with unsuccessful Tuition Waiver applicants to provide oneonone support to explore additional postsecondary funding opportunities.
  • Oversee development and execution of Tuition Waiver Program evaluation activities; analyze evaluation results and put forward recommendations for the future programming.
  • Provide detailed program statistics on Tuition Waiver Program applicants for yearend reporting.

Resource Development

  • Evaluate, maintain, and update scholarship guide and transitional program guide annually, including researching new and existing opportunities relevant for participants.
  • Research applicable bursaries and scholarships that will support youth in or from care to access and pursue postsecondary education; compile and share relevant information with participants, team members, and participants' support networks (including social workers, care givers, and educators).
