The Housing Selection and Advocacy Worker (HSAW) will build relationships to obtain and retain appropriate private and public sector housing units throughout London for the clients supported through the Independent and Youth Focused portfolio of the Supportive Housing Department.

The Housing Selection and Advocacy Worker will develop and maintain effective relationships and working partnerships with landlords, property owners, and/or property management.

In addition, the Housing Selection and Advocacy Worker will support clients who are homeless or at risk of being homelessness, to find and procure accommodation consistent with providing a psychosocial model of care.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:

What you'll be making - $ $25.71 per hour, rate based on proof of comparable, previous experience; mileage between sites reimbursed per kilometre

When you'll work:

  • 70 hours over twoweek period. Monday to Friday; hours to be determined (9am 5pm or 10am 6pm)

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE:


_ Housing Selection:
_


  • Locate and engage both private and public sector property owners, property managers, housing developers, and/or landlords with emphasis on the support that our programs can provide
  • Secure a number of appropriate, housing units in varied geographic locations within the City of London including diverse building and unit types and a range in affordability, amenities and support levels
  • Liaise with community partners to develop relationships and secure housing with public and nonprofit housing providers and developers in the City of London.
  • Maintain an inventory of the above housing options
  • Clarify perceptions of the role of CMHA Supportive Housing programs regarding landlord and tenant relationships
  • Facilitate open and timely communication with landlords/building superintendents to ensure positive relationships and resolve emerging concerns or issues
  • Ensure landlords/building superintendents understand the nature of the partnership, the role and function of the Housing Support Workers and the goals and objectives of our Independent Supportive Housing Programs
  • Develop practices and protocols that promote positive housing outcomes including such things as pay direct for rent and utilities, and conflict resolution practices
  • Organize a landlord roundtable of CMHA Independent Housing partners that convenes 24 times per year to discuss community progress, possible concerns and strategies for resolution or program enhancement
  • Collaborate and coordinate service with other service providers

Housing Advocacy_**- Support clients/families in need of housing to find and secure safe, suitable, affordable housing

  • Help clients/families access resources for housingrelated assistance (i.e. furniture procurement, utility assistance, etc.)
  • Advocate with managers and owners for tenancy and negotiate costs when possible
  • Coordinate connection with other services if needed
  • Other duties as required

We require the following qualifications:
_**- University/college degree or diploma in the social science field (
Primary proof of credentials will be required during the hiring process, i.e.

original degree/diploma/certificate or official transcript):


  • Ontario Driver's License
  • Vehicle
  • Insurance adequate for transporting clients
  • Ability to attend work regularly

We prefer the following qualifications:
_**- Minimum of one year work experience in the mental health and/or addictions field

  • Experience working with homeless/marginalized populations
  • Experience working with landlords, developers, and property services
  • A high level of communication skills including dispute resolution practices.
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Experience working with private market housing partners.
  • A working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act and associated Acts.
  • Knowledge of Municipal Bylaws and Residential licensing
  • Knowledge of computerized documentation methods
  • Health and safety knowledge
  • Crisis intervention and prevention
  • Applied Suicide Interventions Skills and Training
