Job Summary:


Reporting to the Executive Director, the Education Centre Coordinator supports the mandate, mission, vision and goals of the Yukon Learn Society (YLS) through managing the effective and efficient operation of the Education Centre charged with planning, developing and delivering literacy programs and services in the Whitehorse area.

The incumbent is responsible for the duties outlined in this position description.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Education Centre Coordinator manages and advises on the planning, development, coordination, and instruction of YLS programs and services in the Whitehorse area:

  • Manages day-to-day operations of the Education Centre, developing it as a central location for tutor and learner activities;
  • Advises and assists community groups and individuals regarding overall development and delivery of literacy programs and services;
  • Collaborates with community groups, representatives and sponsors on information exchange, literacy needs, coordination and logistics (e.g., location, scheduling, advertising) for program development and delivery;
  • Provides group and individual information and training sessions on all YLS programs and services;
  • Provides orientation on YLS policies, procedures and program resources to volunteer tutors and learners;
  • Provides and facilitates elearning/webbased instruction for volunteer tutors and clients;
  • Assists in developing program/project and related funding proposals that meet literacy needs, including identifying and initiating negotiations with prospective funding sources and partners;
  • Liaises with Yukon University and other learning institutions and agencies to help prepare learners for entrance to further education and training;
  • Provides guidance and direction on recruitment and training of volunteer tutors;
  • Interviews and assesses potential learners and incoming referrals from other agencies, matching tutors and learners, and making referrals to other agencies and programs where applicable;
  • Maintains accurate and uptodate program and client files and other documentation, including development and management of tutor/learning database information (e.g., monitoring, tracking and monthly/annual reporting of tutor and student hours, records that support recognition awards); and
  • Researches, reviews and purchases computer programs, literacy materials, and tools useful to learners.
  • Coordinates and delivers services in a variety of communitybased settings or outreach locations with diverse cultural dynamics, needs and interests;
  • Maintains current knowledge of other literacy programs and services nationally, and makes recommendations for development and improvements for programming, projects, workshops and conferences relevant to Yukon learners;
  • Provides information and ongoing support to communitybased volunteer tutors and learners;
  • Coordinates recruitment and advertising for tutors, learners and contract instructors and facilitators on behalf of YLS;
  • Attends all Tradeshows, Employment and Volunteer Expos;
  • Develops and facilitates tutor training workshops, professional development activities and special events, including participating in development and maintenance of tutor training manuals/materials; and
  • Advocates for high quality, Yukonrelevant literacy programs and services; and
  • Works collaboratively with community groups, leaders and resource people, government departments and other agencies, First Nations and sponsors.
The Education Centre Coordinator uses a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural approach to teamwork by promoting positive and participatory relationships with communities, client groups and individuals, and volunteer tutors:
The Education Centre Coordinator supports the goals, programs and services of YLS:

  • Researches, compiles and reports on relevant statistics, including monthly, annual and specific project reports on program activities that support decision making, accountability and new or revised programs, policies and procedures;
  • Purchases resources in accordance with budget guidelines, recommends purchase of equipment and ensures it is kept in safe working condit
