TCP has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time
Supervisor, Technical Services.

Reporting to the Manager, Facility Operations and as a key member of the Animal Resources Team, the incumbent will provide direct supervision, leadership, and support to a team of veterinary technicians.


Role and Responsibilities:


  • Trains, evaluates, schedules, and directs the activities of the veterinary technical personnel
  • Coordinates and assigns work schedules for veterinary technical personnel to ensure balanced workloads and efficient workflow
  • Evaluates staffing needs to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained to meet the facility goals
  • Oversight and awareness of each team member's strengths and technical abilities, identifying areas requiring additional training or expertise to broaden the scope of veterinary technical services
  • Ensures all daily work is done in a timely fashion and in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulations
  • Under the guidance of the Facility Manager, responsible for staff performance management, which includes providing timely feedback, coaching/counseling and progressive remediation
  • Confers with researchers regularly regarding daytoday operations as well as special handling, treatment, and research needs
  • Assists the veterinarians in assuring the provision of adequate veterinary care and maintaining compliance with CCAC and OMAFRA regulations and guidelines for the humane and appropriate care and use of research animals
  • Key member of the Quality Assurance, Controlled Substances and Health Surveillance programs
  • Liaisons and communicates regularly with the Services Coordinator, Core Managers, Facility Manager, veterinarians, and research staff
  • Participates as a member of the Institutional Animal Care Committee
  • Promotes and supports a positive working environment within the facility
  • Must be a strong advocate for the 3Rs of animalbased science
  • Reviews and revises standard operating procedures for animal use and maintains inventory of equipment, instruments, and supplies

Qualifications and Education Requirements:


  • Graduate of a CVMA or OAVT accredited Veterinary Technician program or have a university degree in biological sciences combined with relevant experience in laboratory animal science
  • Must be a registered Laboratory Animal Technician with CALAS
  • Exhibit strong technical and surgical skills with at least 5 years of experience in providing high quality veterinary technical support to researchers
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role is preferred
  • Demonstrates use of good leadership, team building and management skills, setting an example, professional communication, counseling, conflict resolution
  • Must have a solid background in animal care and capable of maintaining complex mouse strains
  • Strong knowledge of CCAC guidelines, OMAFRA regulations, Canadian Biosafety Guidelines and Global Harmonized System (WHMIS) is required
  • Experience with Post Approval Monitoring Programs and previous membership on an Animal Care Committee are an asset
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft)
  • Upon employment, the incumbent must be able to obtain a criminal record check clearance letter from Toronto Police Services
