About Us, the Project, and the Partner
Cuso International
Cuso International is a voluntary cooperation and international development organization committed to providing new socio-economic perspectives to marginalized groups. Alongside our partners, we focus on promoting gender equality and social inclusion, enhancing economic resilience, and climate action. Founded in 1961, Cuso International operates in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. We seek individuals who share our values and are dedicated to supporting marginalized groups, including LGBTQIA+ communities.
Project - SHARE (Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality)
Cuso International will implement the SHARE project (Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality) with the support of Global Affairs Canada (GAC) over a seven-year period. SHARE aims to enhance the economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized, and vulnerable individuals, particularly women and girls in developing countries, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to strengthening Canadians' engagement in international development and key global issues, this project will strive to improve the performance of partner countries to promote innovative initiatives and more inclusive sustainable environmental development that advances gender equality by implementing the key areas of Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy.
Terms and Conditions
Cuso International's conditions allow for a modest and healthy lifestyle, similar to the local living standard. Cuso International support helps cover a volunteer cooperator's basic living expenses but is not intended for domestic expenses (e.g., mortgage, student loans, school fees, etc.) or luxury items such as importing goods from abroad, personal international travel, etc.
Support Package
Selection Criteria
If shortlisted for the assignment, you will be required to:
Fundraising
We ask each volunteer cooperator, regardless of assignment duration, to raise $2,000. All volunteer cooperators will receive support from Cuso International to reach this goal. If a volunteer cooperator chooses not to raise funds or is unable to meet the fundraising target, they may make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
Pre-Placement Training - Skills and Knowledge for Working in Development Program (SKWID)
We are committed to helping you prepare for your assignment. A volunteer mobilization advisor will support you throughout the process, and you will participate in pre-placement training as part of your preparation. You will also have access to self-directed learning materials, online training, and external resources through the volunteer portal. This training is designed to enhance your understanding of your assignment and the culture, help you identify and plan your learning, and support your safety and well-being during the assignment.
Protection Against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
Cuso International works with poor, vulnerable, and marginalized populations, mainly women and girls, to eliminate poverty and inequality. We recognize the need to uphold and strengthen the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.
At Cuso International, we believe that everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, birthplace, skin color, ethnic origin, nationality, religious beliefs, gender, age, criminal record, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, gender expression and identity, or disability, has the right to live free from harassment, sexual exploitation, and abuse.
Cuso International views all forms of harassment, exploitation, and sexual violence as incompatible with the fundamental belief in the human dignity of all individuals, with national and international agreements and standards, as well as with our core values.
Cuso International volunteer cooperators must commit to adhering to policies and codes of conduct related to child protection, workplace violence prevention, workplace harassment and discrimination prevention, and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Residency and Citizenship
During the application and assignment phases, most Cuso International candidates are based in Canada, although we also receive applications from abroad. Regardless of your place of residence, maintaining easy and quick communication between your application date and departure date is essential. We may request your passport, need to know your current residence, and be informed of your travel plans.
Leaving your country of residence may impact your citizenship status. If you leave your place of residence for an assignment, you are responsible for inquiring about the implications with local immigration authorities. By applying, you accept full responsibility for any consequences regarding your citizenship, residency, or immigrant status. Canadian permanent residents must make arrangements with immigration authorities before traveling to avoid any risks to their resident status.
