GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Manager, Child and Youth Program, this position assists in our after school cooking, leadership, homework and healthy lifestyle programs for youth aged 7-18, and children 7-12 in the Taylor Massey Neighbourhood.
This position reports to Manager, Children & Youth Services and is part ofCUPE LOCAL 7797.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Assist in developing and facilitating age and culturally appropriate programs promoting healthy lifestyles and choices for participants and their parents.
- Supervise and ensure a safe environment for participants, assist them with homework, facilitate physical fitness programs and maintain the adult staff to participant ratio.
- Prepare healthy snacks and drinks as per Canada's Food Guide, following safe food handling guidelines.
- Participate and assist in the development and implementation of outreach to engage youth in Taylor Massey including barriered youth with disabilities and from diverse communities (racial, cultural, sexual orientation.)
- Assist in the recruitment, development, and training of volunteers.
- Accompany participants to and from organized events and outings when required.
- Provide general information and referral services to participants on recreation, housing, preemployment, education, health and other services and advocate for youth and parents.
- Maintain timely, accurate records and statistics.
- Provide other services and carry out other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Child and Youth Worker, or other related Diploma preferred
- One or more years of related professional experience working with youth aged 1318 and children aged 71
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the child and youth communities. Previous experience facilitating empowering programs for barriered youth aged 1318 would be an asset.
- The ability to facilitate programs for children and youth at all levels of athletic ability and for those with physical or intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges and or challenging behaviours.
- The ability and willingness to lead and participate in active play, including water and other outdoor activities, and to work effectively and collaboratively in a team.
- An understanding of the objectives of the project.
- The ability to recruit and motivate children, youth and volunteers, from diverse communities.
- Basic familiarity with computer software, especially word processing, and with keeping information in a database.
- Food handling certification would be an asset.
- First Aid, U.M.A.B. and CPR certification would be an asset.
- The physical ability to undertake frequent light to moderate lifting, occasional heavy lifting, and frequent walking, bending, stretching and pulling.
