Job Summary:

The School Bus Router position is responsible for ensuring safe transportation of students to and from school.

The overall purpose of the position is to plan and coordinate efficient bus routes that minimize travel time and maximize safety.

The position involves assigning students to bus route(s) through the Transportation Department routing software (Transfinder), updating run sheets, run binders, and maps.

The School Bus Router ensures that all students are transported to and from school safely, that bus routes are optimized, and that all transportation-related records are accurately maintained.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • School Bus Routing using Transfinder software. o assigning students to bus routes, and making adjustments on and off the bus as required throughout the school year o updating run sheets o updating run binder o updating maps o Plan and coordinate efficient bus routes that minimize travel time and maximize safety. o Communicating the newly assigned routes and adjustments with drivers
  • All Field Trip related work o Assigning o Approving o Invoicing o Communicating the assigned field trips with drivers
  • All correspondence with school and parents regarding Field Trips and Routing
  • Provide support to dispatch via phone calls, radio, etc.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:


Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous bus routing experience
  • 12 years of office experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and routing software
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in a school division or education setting is preferred, but not required.
Skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of routing software: o proficient in using routing software such as the Transfinder routing systems to create efficient and safe bus routes.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills: o analyzes data, identifies issues, and develops solutions to optimize routes, reduces travel time, and increases safety.
  • Attention to detail: o excellent attention to detail to ensure that all bus routes are accurately mapped, and schedules are updated correctly.
  • Communication skills: o effectively communicates with school officials, bus drivers, and parents to resolve any routing issues or concerns.
  • Time management skills: o manages multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Understanding of transportation regulations: o familiar with federal and state regulations regarding school bus transportation and ensure compliance with these regulations.
  • Ability to work in a team: o works collaboratively with other staff members, including dispatchers, drivers, and school administrators, to ensure that transportation needs are met effectively.
  • Flexibility: o adapts to changes in bus routes, schedules, or weather conditions, and make necessary adjustments to ensure the safe transportation of students

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while using a computer and mapping software
  • Ability to lift and move boxes and files weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, and navigate the school division to verify bus routes, stops, and addresses

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment with moderate noise levels
  • Frequent use of computer and phone and radio to communicate with drivers and school officials
  • Occasional work outside in all weather conditions to verify routes and bus stops
  • May require occasional evening or weekend work to attend meetings or events
