About Hopscotch:
Hopscotch is an early learning and child care centre providing high quality service to approximately 100 children and their families from our centre in St.
This includes a top quality nutrition program which includes two snacks and lunch each day, within a food culture focused on quality and safety.
Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Kitchen Helper/Dishwasher to join our team.
As a team, and under the direction of the Centre Chef / Nutrition Supervisor, your role would be to perform the kitchen functions each day, working with the centre chef in the morning and taking over once the Centre Chef has gone home in the afternoon.
This includes collecting and washing dishes (AM snack, Lunch and PM snack), taking and storing deliveries, re-stocking kitchen, cleaning kitchen, taking meals to playrooms, and some food prep.
Duties:
- Adhere to food safety and sanitation practices as part of our strong food safety culture
- Perform kitchen clean up (dishes breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack dishes, clean and sanitize surfaces, floors, equipment, etc) ensuring kitchen is sanitary
- Maintain the kitchen so that all areas of the kitchen are clean and the kitchen is well organized
- Food prep portion meals and snacks, cut to safe sizes, for all age groups
- Follow meal and snack schedule for delivering meals to rooms
- Be aware of all food allergies and special food needs
- Monitor and record temperature(s) and ensure they meet AHS standards (includes refrigerators, freezers, sanitizer, cooked food to safe temps, etc.)
- Ensure all foods are stored, labelled, and rotated properly (FIFO)
- Ensure all 'best before' dates are observed and followed
- Take delivery of food supplies and ensure proper storage
- Follow proper hygiene, washing hands regularly and avoiding cross contamination
- Dress appropriately for work, wearing a clean apron and hair net each day rubber soled closed toe shoes with good support
- Aware of all the hazards of the job and able to take all necessary precautions for your own health and safety
- Adhere to all health policies and procedures (i.e. staying home when ill)
- As required, cover for the centre chef (e.g. when on vacation)
Job Requirements:
- Food safety certificate approved in Alberta to meet Section 31 of the Food Regulation (can obtain after start date)
- Clear Criminal Record Check including a vulnerable sector search
- Knowledge of Canada Food Guide
- Knowledge (and/or willingness to learn) of applicable food regulations and codes in Alberta: Food Regulation (Public Health Act), Alberta Food Retail and Foodservices Code (2022), Health and Safety Guide for Operators of Child Care Facilities
- Ability to lift 45lbs minimum frequently, stand for duration of shift, work in warm environment
- Repetitive use of upper body and reaching overhead
- WHMIS certification (be willing to complete course)
