GFL Ottawa is looking for a chemical technician supervisor to support our liquids division


Key Responsibilities:


Production at Waste Transfer and Processing:

  • Assign production and waste handling activities to achieve company goals by communicating expectations, assigning tasks, and evaluating results and daily performance.
  • Oversee day to day labpack receiving, bulking, and processing activities.
  • Maintenance of chemical processing rooms and associated workspace.
  • Maintaining container storage area and related signage and accurate inventory records.
  • Manage chemicals, PPE, and equipment consumable inventories related to waste processing activities.
  • Monitor the incoming and outgoing waste inventory. Work with the Operations Supervisor to plan and prepare waste shipments to various receivers as needed.
  • Schedule and assign personnel for lab packing services, work with sales to provide lab packing summaries to ensure compliance and estimate supplies required.
  • Planning and assigning staff for HHW events in the summer.
  • Maintenance of records on Waste Database, monitoring of incoming and outgoing inventory records and sample movement.
  • Update work order status and driver times in OMS and chain of custody for incoming and outgoing waste paperwork.
  • Fill in for Operations Supervisor as needed.

Supervision and Staff Development:


  • Tracking and recording of employee hours, both GFL and Staffing Companies.
  • Tracking and approving employee vacation and time away from work and scheduling of staff to accommodate incoming business volume.
  • Recording of incidents using the SEMS system.
  • Assist in the hiring, assessment, training, and disciplinary actions of staff when required.
  • Oversee and delegate tasks to the Chemical Operators, Forklift drivers and Labourers in accordance with the daily targets.
  • Ensure daily scheduled activities are completed (working with staff)
  • Monitor Health & Safety of floor staff and communicate hazards of daily incoming waste and activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:


  • Relevant laboratory experience (experience and understanding of industrial and liquid waste industry preferred) including a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role
  • Degree in chemistry (advanced degree preferred)
  • Knowledge about analytical instrumentation (experience with gas chromatographymass spectrometry and liquid chromatographymass spectroscopy would be an asset)
  • Knowledge of TDG, Ontario Reg. 347 and Ontario Health and Safety Act (knowledge about RPRA documentation would be an asset)
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Possess superior organizational and people management skills
  • Flexible to work extended hours
  • Proficient computer skills that must include Microsoft Office suite
  • Must be able to utilize required personal protective equipment (hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, safety footwear)
  • Able to work outdoors, exposed to the ambient weather conditions
