Key Responsibilities:


  • Assist with the implementation and ongoing administration of the company's occupational health and safety program.
  • Promote health and safety awareness among all employees with a focus on injury prevention
  • Compile and analyze accident and injury data; report to management, identifying the need for new or modified occupational safety programs
  • Assist in development of Health and Safety performance metrics.
  • Provide advice and counsel to management and employees on occupational safety issues and decisions.
  • Orient and train all new employees to ensure complete understanding of potential risks and expected behaviors within the workplace.
  • Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury reporting and WSIB form 7s
  • Aid in investigating and reporting workplace injuries and incidents, including recommendation to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Liaise with WSIB and insurance providers on all claims, including managing appeals where appropriate
  • Manage return to work programs and create modified work plans as needed, working closely with the employee and their supervisor to ensure the employee's safe and speedy return to work.
  • Co-Chair the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) ensuring regular meetings, minutes, inspections, accident investigations and resolution of issues.
  • Maintain company training matrix and organize the rollout of programs.
  • Conduct job hazard and physical demands analysis and create reports.
  • Evaluate departmental safety issues and conduct regular safety talks or assist Group Leaders to develop weekly safety talks.
  • Develop safe work procedures and maintain appropriate records.
  • Inspect work areas, conduct audits and make recommendations to improve safety and health standards and undertake appropriate action where unsafe conditions have been identified or recommended by the Joint Occupation Health and Safety Committee.
  • Ensure that work refusals are properly investigated and that any necessary corrections to the work processes are implemented and documented
  • Assist in coordinating Health, Safety and Wellness events such as emergency drills, or companywide safety celebrations or days.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Labour (MLSTD) as required
  • Create, monitor, amend and update the organization's Health and Safety Handbook
  • Assist in the preparation of the occupational health and safety budget
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Manage the first aid room and substation inventory/supplies
  • Maintain the SDS binder, ensuring all SDS's are current and new chemical products are approved prior to use in manufacturing.
  • Provide contractor's Health & Safety information or policies as required. Complete the Form 1000 and pass on any safety requirements to Delivery or Service departments.
  • Conduct Working at Heights/Crane/Forklift theory/practical training
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Three to five years' experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial establishment.
  • Completion of a Health and Safety Certificate or Degree program from a recognized College or University or equivalent experience.
  • Certified Health and Safety Consultant CHSC or Canadian Registered Safety Professional CRSP designation preferred or working towards.
  • First Aid certification, preferred but not required.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding OHSA and workers' compensation legislation.
  • JHSC certification

Working Conditions:


  • Office based (50%); Plant based (50%) working in a manufacturing facility.
  • Monday to Friday, 7.5 hour shift, on days with some requirement to support other shifts.
