About the Opportunity


As a member of the team, the Physician Assistant (PA) will report to the Primary Supervising Surgeon and functions within a dynamic collaborative care team.

Under the supervision of a surgeon/physician, the PA will provide general medical and surgical care to patients with a wide variety of traumatic injuries, acute conditions, and elective surgical disorders.


Emergency Department:


As a member of the Emergency Department (ED) team, the Physician Assistant (PA) will report to the Primary Supervising Emergency Physician and provide assessment and care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED).

Primary Health Care:


As part to the Nova Scotia Health (NSH) Physician Assistants initiative in Primary Health Care (PHC) and Department of Family Practice, the Physician Assistant (PA) will participate in an NSH and/or NSH affiliated family practice team.

The PA will deliver care in accordance with NSH policies, professional standards, and care directives.

The PA will perform routine clinical duties, within the PA scope of practice and under the supervision of a licensed physician in accordance with the goals and objectives of this initiative.

Orthopaedic Surgery


Nova Scotia Health's Central Zone Orthopaedic services team combines excellence in teaching, research, and clinical care with a group of surgeons representing every subspeciality of orthopaedic care.

Our Orthopaedic teams at the QEII Health Sciences Centre (QEII)-Halifax Infirmary (HI) site, Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH) and Hants Community Hospital (HCH) are comprised of diverse health care professionals (e.g., clinical assistants, dieticians, nurses, occupational therapists, orthopaedic technologists, pharmacists, physician assistants, physiotherapists, social workers, surgeons) to provide holistic person-centred care.

The care provided by our inter-professional teams reaches more than forty thousand (40,000) patients a year and they complete over six thousand (6,000) surgeries annually, with the QEII Health Sciences Centre serving as the tertiary site for the most complex and specialized surgeries, including spinal, trauma, reconstructive and revision surgeries.

Responsibilities Can Include

  • Conducting history and physical examinations
  • Requests for consultation
  • Assessment and plans for treatment of inperson consultation
  • Workup, including documentation of consults
  • Patient care rounds
  • Surgical assisting
  • Postoperative orders and inhospital management of patients, and followup clinic assessments and treatment plans


This position will offer the PA an opportunity to work to full scope of practice as outlined in the agreement between the Primary Supervising Physician and the PA.


About You

  • Graduate of or currently enrolled in an accredited recognized Physician Assistant program
  • Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA), granted by the Physician Assistants Certification Council of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Three to five years of professional experience in a similar related academic health care environment
  • Experience in the area/program is preferred
  • The following certifications or willingness to obtain,Certification in CTAS
