Maintenance Co-op Student


Under general supervision performs duties of a Millwright Student, responsible to assist in mechanical duties, maintains equipment, follows safety regulations and performs other related or required duties.


Specific Accountabilities

Mechanical Duties & Equipment

  • Assists in repairs and installs various facilities, such as steel structures, vertical lift doors, siding and other mechanical type work projects.
  • Assists in repairs of mobile equipment, such as HPA vehicles, HPA heavy equipment, and HPA vessels.
  • Assists in repairs and maintenance on other equipment such as welders, gangways, rostrums, and any other equipment used by various shops.
  • Assists in welding, cutting and burning as required.
  • Install of reinforcing steel for various projects, as required.
  • Submits reports to Working Shop Foreman of job completion.
  • Reads drawings and sketches and works from these as required.
  • Assists in inspections of equipment and facilities and accurately diagnoses and repairs any mechanical, structural, or welding related trouble.

Safety

  • Adheres to all HPA policies, procedures and practices, including safety & environmental regulations/measures, and is responsible for his own safety.
  • Wears proper protective clothing and equipment while performing duties.
  • Ensures all safety precautions are taken when performing duties.
  • Reports all accidents to supervisor.
  • Keeps welding area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Ensures all lock out and tag out procedures are followed.
  • Assists and ensures involvement in the development and maintenance of applicable procedures.
  • Communicate any relevant information on the environment aspect and identify nonconformities to their supervisor or the EMS Coordinator.
  • Follow and comply with all relevant EMS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a technical trades related program at NSCC and have a minimum of a grade 12 or equivalent education.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and high elevations.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly organized individual who takes pride and ownership in their work with high attention to detail and consistently follows through on commitments.
  • Acceptable command of the English language, both oral and written.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills are considered an asset.
  • Accepts the need for change and can learn and adjust quickly.
  • Demonstrates ability to remain focused and effective under stressful situations.
  • Proven ability to be selfdirected and selfmotivated.
The term of this position will be from April 22, 2024, to August 23, 2024.

The compensation for this student position will vary depending on program and year of study. The minimum student rate is $19.00 per hour.
