About this opportunity:
Cenovus Energy has an exciting opportunity for an Asphalt Operator based in Kamloops, BC.

Reporting to the Site Coordinator, Asphalt Operators are responsible for all site operations. Operations on this site is primarily rail to tank to truck product handing and production of asphalt emulsion products.

As a senior operator, the day to day will be more on planning, liaising with customers and carriers, as well as engineering and maintenance.

The Operators are responsible for keeping operating procedures current, equipment troubleshooting, preparing equipment for maintenance (LOTO), and preparing permits. They also support the training of new Operators and provide the knowledge for operating the terminal equipment.


This role requires an individual who demonstrates clear and concise communication skills, and who can function in a busy working environment.


Work Environment:

  • This is a full-time employee position working Monday to Friday with the potential for overtime hours.

What you'll do:


Support Maintenance and Project Activities- Work with maintenance to plan maintenance activities around operations requirements.- Verifying pre job plans.- Plan and perform lock out tag out for maintenance purposes.- Support maintenance contractors by communicating requirements, policies, and procedures.- Write and issue permits for work to be completed on site.- Participate and lead tailgate and hazard assessment meetings.- Auditing LOTOs, Permits, Procedures, Tailgate Meetings for quality and completeness.


Performing Rounds- Monitor and operate steam and hot oil systems.- Maintain boiler logs.- Ensure all technical safety and regulatory requirements are met for equipment operation.- Maintain operator logs and handover.- Routine visual inspections of tanks, piping, pumps, and other equipment.- Volume measurement, physical count reporting.


Administrative- Liaise with customers and carriers.- Schedule operations and customer/carrier load times.- Scale house operation.- Bill of lading creation, sign-off and filing.


Production Planning and Milling/Blending Operations- Create daily production plan.- Consult with technical services on product issues.- Sample and test products following procedures.- Record/report production.- Emulsion Milling.- Treated water production.- Procedure writing and updating.


Product Handling- Loading/Unloading trucks with asphalt/emulsion.- Unloading raw materials from railcars.- Unloading raw materials from trucks.- Transferring product between tanks.- Operating steam and hot oil systems.- Procedure writing and updating.


Participate in Competency Program- Participate in development and review of Operating Procedures.- Provide coaching, on-the-job training and assessments to employees as required.


Lead Site Health and Safety Program- Lead safety meetings, tailgate, pre-job, and field level hazard assessments.- Report all near misses and incidents.- Take part in investigation and corrective action development.- Perform behavioural observations and record/report results.


Who you are:

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada. 4th class power engineering certification required.
  • Technical Diploma would be an asset.
  • Experience in Oil & Gas operations
  • Experience in any fluid handling operation
  • Experience as a boiler/steam plant operator
  • Experience in truck loading operation
