Human Resources Business Partner

Organizational Effectiveness and Employee Relations


With a strong relationship focus, the HR Business Partner supports CAS of Toronto's management and staff by understanding their key objectives and providing advice, coaching, guidance and consultation as an Employee Relations/ Labour Relations and Organizational Effectiveness resource.

The HR Business Partner ensures legislative obligations are met and appropriate actions are taken with regard to complaints, investigations, grievances and mediation of workplace conflict, while also working to contribute to harmonious employee-employer relationships and a positive, productive labour relations environment.

This position also supports employee and organizational development initiatives such as performance management, change initiatives, leadership development, diversity and equity initiatives.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understands the priorities and operations of the branches/departments to provide effective guidance, coaching and advice on human resources related matters in accordance with applicable legislations, policies, collective agreements, processes and procedures. Approach includes identification of risk, consideration of impact to the branches/departments and recommended solutions.
  • Consults with supervisors and managers to provide support with performance processes (e.g. coaching and performance appraisals) and change initiatives from both an OD and ER/LR lens to ensure successfully performing teams and staff.
  • Provides advice and guidance on business planning & organizational issues in support of strategic and operational objectives and people management strategies such as diversity and equity and career development initiatives.
  • Coordinates and/or takes necessary actions to support and lead HR processes related to complaints, investigations, mediation or other OE interventions as required.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends including HR Metrics within branches/ departments and CAST. Provides research and analysis of data on various labour relations processes including grievance, arbitration and collective bargaining.
  • Works collaboratively with other colleague(s) fostering and supporting a team environment.
  • Provides HR support to committees, projects, and policy/program development as required. Supports other members of the Human Resources Departments as needed.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with the Society's health and safety policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.
  • Acts in accordance with and incorporates Society's Code of Ethics, Confidentiality, Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination policies, etc.
  • Complies with Society's policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • A completed undergraduate degree in Human Resources plus 6 years' progressive experience in Human Resources;
    OR:
  • A completed undergraduate degree plus a post-secondary certificate in Human Resources plus 6 years' progressive experience in Human Resources;
    OR:
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Possess or currently working towards CHRP/CHRL designation.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Strong HR Generalist background in a unionized environment with core competencies in the areas of employee relations, labour relations and organizational effectiveness.
  • Relationship building skills and ability to gain trust and confidence of a client group.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, problemsolving, and organizational processes.
  • Creativity and resourcefulness in demonstrating multiple solutions to issues.
  • Excellent consulting, communication and engagement skills, coupled with the ability to influence stakeholders in establishing/delivering HR actions.
  • Consistently sound judgment, flexibility and the ability to work successfully under pressure
  • Exceptional commitment to customer service using a variety of methods to support leaders to make the right decisions.
  • Selfmotivated & goal oriented high initiative and ability to prioritize and multitask while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, take ownership of duties and responsibilities, unwavering professionalism and diplomacy even when challenged.
  • Sound knowledge of human resources best practices and employment related legislation.
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills, ability to analyze data and prepare reports, and work with HR data.
  • High degree of proficiency in all MS office programs.

Assets:


  • Previous employee/labour relations experience
  • Human Resources experience working in a nonprofit and/or unionized environment
  • Masters in Human Resources or Industrial Rel
