The Research Financial Analyst ensures University and funder financial compliance in terms of budget development, ongoing financial monitoring, quarterly variance reporting, reconciliation, fiscal year and grant year-end reconciliations and reporting (internal and external) related to research.

The Research Financial Analyst provides a central point of contact for efficient and accurate monitoring of project/research revenues and expenses.

The Analyst liaises with funding agencies and external constituents as well as a wide variety of internal members to provide financial and operational guidance to ensure efficient and effective financial due diligence.

Some Typical Duties:


  • Keeps current on and provides clarification of granting funding agencies' policies and eligibility guidelines. Maintains strong working relationships with funder representatives.
  • Sets up tracking/monitoring processes for new grants, develops and maintains a matrix of all grants with appropriate due dates for researchers, research services, finance and financial reporting.
  • Supports grant holders' understanding of policies, procedures and regulations related to their respective research grants; responds to financial queries from grant holders as required.
  • In consultation with the Manger, Research Administration + Operations, assists in preparation of operational budget for the Research and Industry Office including monitoring department's general ledger accounts, compiling data, and providing internal and external reports and claims, reviewing expenses, purchases, and other transactions on department accounts.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Research Administration + Operations, develops appropriate reporting formats and prepares and presents financial statements for all research grants to stakeholders as required (grant holders, Research Centre Directors, Financial Services, etc.).
  • Provides orientation to grant holders and Research staff on GL account structure, procedures for expense claims, invoicing, payroll for Research Assistants, and how to access financial information on myEC.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Research Administration + Operations, provides financial support for internal and external award administration by:
  • Overseeing all research general ledger accounts, performing analysis and reconciliation, and performing chart of accounts maintenance.
  • Liaising with Financial Services regarding project cost centres.
  • Ensuring tracking and monitoring processes are in place before project spending occurs.
  • Reviewing and monitoring and approving expenses on research accounts (fund 25) to ensure compliance with funder criteria as well as to ensure compliance with approved budget and to confirm sufficient funds are available.
  • Providing regular reports on revenues and expenditures to the award and grant holder.
  • Preparing journal entries and schedules for research accounts for timely submission to Financial Services.
  • Preparing and submitting funding agency financial claims and reports by required deadlines and ensuring grant holder final or interim submission deadlines are met.
  • Provides financial services to Research Centres by assisting with budget development, providing ongoing financial monitoring, assisting with fiscal year end reconciliations and reporting, and initiating correcting journal entries.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Research Administration + Operations, manages research databases (e.g., Project Accounting, ROMEO), including the production of complex, analytical reports, and statistical information.
