    DESCRIPTIONThe Legal Counsel will research and analyze legal issues; draft, review, analyze, and negotiate construction contracts; draft other documents and correspondence; manage claims; and assist with other legal and corporate matters.

    Subject to the department workflow document designed by the Chief Legal Officer this position will provide research, advice, and other legal assistance to the senior members of the Legal Department.

    The position may also provide counsel to management within the company and coordinate with outside legal counsel.

    Critical for success are the abilities to take initiative, multi-task, act decisively, work independently, maintain confidentiality, exercise good judgment, and project a professional image.

    Excellent persuasion and professional communication skills are musts, as well as an acute attention to detail.

    team player, hard-working, deadline oriented, risk tolerant, and demonstrates integrity and sound ethics. This position will be based in our Canadian Head office located in Nisku, AB.

    RESPONSIBILITIESMaintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

    Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions. Stop work in the area of an identified health or safety problem until resolved.
    Performs pre-litigation work to minimize risks and maximize legal rights.

    Advise Departments and Divisions as assigned in the department workflow document on legal issues and risks, complex agreement structures, approval processes, and company policies.

    Research and interpret various regulatory requirements and inform and update appropriate parties in other departments.

    Prepare and negotiate contract documentation with customers of the company, providing summary and concerns to senior legal team members for execution.

    Keeps abreast of legislative changes that may affect the company and its affiliates.
    Provides training to company and its affiliates on substantive legal topics.
    Develop CLE plan with oversight and input from the Chief Legal Officer. The plan should include participation in an offsite program annually.
    The position may also provide counsel to management within the company and coordinate with outside legal counsel.
    Exercise sound judgment while making decisive decisions, work independently, and uphold confidentiality standards.
    Other duties as assigned.
    REQUIREMENTSLLB or Juris Doctor from accredited law school.
    Holds current license to practice law before the Canadian Bar Association.
    Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.5 years minimum of experience.
    Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
    DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONSSome experience in energy and infrastructure law.
    Some experience with labor and employment law.
    LANGUAGESMust be able to communicate verbally and through written language (by hand and digitally) in English.
