What you offer?


Reporting to the Neighbourhood Day Camp Coordinator, the NDC Inclusion Counsellors are responsible for providing one on one support to campers with special needs.

Inclusion Counsellors will receive training and support but should come into the role with experience working in this sector.

Inclusion Counsellors are caring, enthusiastic, and patient and will use integrative strategies to ensure each camper's success in the program.


This position requires a commitment to the mission and core values of responsibility, honesty, caring, and respect, which form the foundation of all Y programs and services.


Positions available at various locations across the city such as:

  • Ottawa Center
  • Ottawa-WestNepean
  • Nepean
  • Clarence-Rockland
  • Ottawa South
  • Orleans
  • Ottawa-Vanier
  • Kanata

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Provide one-on-one and two-on-one support to children with special needs. Actively supervise assigned camper(s), learning their name(s) on the first day and knowing their whereabouts at all times.
  • Manage behavioral incidents and implement behavioral redirection strategies as necessary.
  • Act as a positive role model in attitude, health, and wellness for campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist in developing program inclusion strategies to create a positive experience for all campers.
  • Prepare and deliver exceptional day camp programming. Create developmentally appropriate program plans. Deliver day camp programs to assigned camper groups. Act as a resource to camp staff team in terms of inclusive programming.
  • Lead programming with an awareness of the camper's emotional wellbeing as well as physical safety.
  • Participate actively in all camp activities and special events. Staff will be required to swim or be in pools with the participants.
  • To be responsible for the safety, supervision, and security of all participants in your care at all times by following the YMCA Policies and Procedures. Administering first aid, and writing accident/incident reports as required.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and in a timely manner (site checks, program paperwork, incident reports, precamp phone calls, staff meetings, and parent feedback). Positive communication, problem solving, and addressing concerns in a timely manner with camper families.
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users, and all program participants of the YMCA of the National Capital Region.

Education

  • High School Diploma, Post-Secondary Education
  • ECE certification is an asset

Language
