JOB SUMMARY


Reporting to the Manager of System Engineering, Waterworks Department, the Water Quality Coordinator will be responsible for water quality compliance reporting and records management for both the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

The Water Quality Coordinator will be responsible for the accurate and timely performance of duties in a manner that complies with applicable laws and regulations minimizing liability to the City of Markham.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate compliance with Provincial Regulations and best practices for drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems in Markham.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, prepare work orders, and manage sampling records for both systems.
  • Maintain records of commissioning contractors and prepare invoices for sampling aspects in both water distribution and wastewater systems.
  • Manage records for potential inspections, updating files tracking sampling results and correspondence for both systems.
  • Respond to customer inquiries regarding water quality concerns courteously and efficiently.
  • Prepare written reports and work plans for submission to Town/City council and relevant agencies.
  • Manage sampling budget, reconcile laboratory invoices, prepare reports and tender documents, and coordinate maintenance programs.
  • Coordinate water quality maintenance programs for new subdivision flushing and deadend flushing.
  • Communicate with other Waterworks staff, liaise with uppertier municipalities on Bylaws and water quality issues, and contribute to budget and work planning activities.
  • Provide backup for Compliance Engineering duties when needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum three year College Diploma in the Engineering and Science field
  • Experience in water distribution and wastewater collection systems with an emphasis on compliance and water quality sampling is preferred.
  • Related chemical or laboratory experience / knowledge is an asset.
  • Demonstrated detail orientation and accuracy skills.
  • Knowledge of pertinent water quality provincial laws and regulations including the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations, Sustainable Water & Sewage Systems Act, water quality reporting and records retention requirements, City bylaws and current municipal water and wastewater issues.
  • Knowledge of the operational characteristics, services, and activities of a water quality testing and compliance program.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and facilities of a drinking water distribution system and waste water collection system.
  • Knowledge of principals and procedures of record keeping and report preparation. Demonstrated capability in report writing.
  • Position may occasionally be required to work overtime as necessary.
  • Class G Drivers license in good standing and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
