Instrumentation Technician at our production facility in Kanata, ON.


Location:
Onsite 447 March Road, Kanata, ON.


Two (2) positions available.

JOB SUMMARY

Carries out maintenance program on all instrumentation related to building operations, production facilities, radiation monitoring and measuring equipment; repairs, modifies and calibrates said systems and equipment utilizing up-to-date trade methods and procedures.


WORK PERFORMED

  • Working from schematics or wiring diagrams and layouts, assembles and installs electronic and pneumatic equipment.
  • Examines and tests defective equipment to determine cause of malfunction or failure.
  • Overhauls, tests and calibrates electronic, electrical and pneumatic equipment throughout Company facilities.
  • Maintains and repairs process instrumentation, programmable controllers and computer systems.
  • Maintains air flow measuring equipment and related controls for nuclear ventilation.
  • Carries out the provisions of a continuous instrumentation preventive maintenance system and maintains applicable records.
  • Repairs and keeps records of work done on SERA instrumentation and production process instrumentation.
  • Maintains inventory of adequate spare parts for SERA instrumentation, air flow systems and production Instrumentation.
  • Modifies, as required, newly received equipment to enable interface with existing system.
  • Recommends improvements to electronic and pneumatic systems
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum Grade 12 education;
  • Electronic technologist diploma (3 year program);
  • Pneumatic instrumentation diploma from recognized Provincial College;
  • 5 to 7 years relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Read blue prints and schematics;
  • Do free hand layout schematics and wiring diagrams;
  • Must have good colour vision to distinguish colour coded components and wires;
  • Position involves work at heights and in confined spaces;
  • Must have knowledge of analytical techniques of pneumatic, electric and electronic controls;
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of electronic, electric and pneumatic principles;
  • Must have mechanical aptitude in the use of hand tools for repairs;
  • Must have a good knowledge of all test equipment to be used relevant to this position;
  • Subject to trade rules and regulations as appropriate to this position.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND DECISIONS

  • Recommendation on improvements to systems;
  • Recommendation on new installation and modifications related to instrumentation;
  • Recommendation on equipment and material purchases.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS

  • Loss of property;
  • Plant downtime and production loss;
  • Radiation hazard and possible suspension of AECB license;
  • Carelessness in calibration could result in loss of revenue to BWXT Medical and serious injury or death to self or to others;
  • Stalling of projects;
  • Inefficiency.

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Good verbal skills to enable him/her to communicate with trainees and coworkers;
  • Good sketching skills including a neat, tidy and accurate presentation;
  • Must communicate effectively with technical and professional personnel within the Company, as well as, consultants, contractors and suppliers.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND OTHER DISTINGUISHING ASPECTS

  • Normal hours, but may be required to work on weekends and evenings on an occasional or emergency basis;
  • May be on call 24 hours per day;
  • Required to work in active areas (Nuclear Engery Worker status);
  • Usually laboratory environment frequently working with radioactive materials;
  • Usually works with minimum supervision under direction of Senior Instrument Technician.
