Description

Course Description:
This course affords students an opportunity for hands-on research experience in a laboratory or applied pharmacology setting.

Students will work under the supervision of a faculty member and will submit a final written report and oral presentation.

Enrollment is limited to students in ASSPE2340/ASSPE2082/ASSPE2573/ASSPE0605 programs and requires permission from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

It is the student's responsibility to secure a placement with an approved supervisor before the course begins (a list of potential supervisors will be provided by the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology).

Students will be registered in the course once their ballot form (obtained from the Department) is signed by an approved supervisor and approved by the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Eligible students will be contacted by the Department during the Winter term, occurring prior to their final year of study (i.e. 3rd year of study for most), with details and instructions to apply. Students are expected to spend approximately 200 hours towards this project but this will be project/supervisor dependent. Not eligible for CR/NCR option.

Schedule:
Meeting times with students as needed. ~4-7 hours per week

Salary:
SL1: $ 9,182.42, SL1 LT: $ 9,641.55, SL2: $ 9,826.96, SL2 LT: $10,025.84,

SL3:
$ 10,060.93, SL3 LT: $10,262.15 inclusive of vacation (rates reflect remuneration for teaching 0.5 FCE)


Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Qualifications

Description of duties:


  • Design and execution of studentfacing communication (writing, oral presentations) about the course logistics and course enrolment process
  • Integration of studentfacing communication in the learning management system
  • Management of the intake process of studentsupervisor matching, with an attention to detail in a process with lengthy and dynamic timelines
  • Outreach to faculty members to encourage participation as research project supervisors
  • Interpersonal relationship management of ties with new and continuing supervisors across multiple University of Torontoaffiliated research hospital institutes
  • Proactive conflict prevention and resolution of potential interpersonal conflicts within laboratory research groups, connecting students to resources
  • Holding and facilitating regular student tutorials focused on professional development skills (critical analysis of scientific data, integrity and initiative, scientific communication skills)
  • Organizing and executing poster day presentations, including judging and marking
  • Grading student reflective writing and providing formative feedback comments
