The Ministry has the following responsibilities:

develop curriculum and set standards; evaluate curriculum and assess outcomes; teacher development and certification; support students with diverse learning needs; fund and support school boards; First Nations, Métis and Inuit and Francophone education; and oversees basic education policy and regulations.


Role Responsibilities:


Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Information and Communication Management:

  • Manage OLEP Alberta website and Individual Teacher Bursary website content and updates in both English and French
  • Respond to stakeholder inquiries related to OLEP funding, reporting and projects in both English and French
  • Establish and maintain relations with federal, provincial/territorial representatives and Government of Alberta staff and stakeholders Provide French-English and English-French validation of documents translated for the branch2.
Coordinate the Ministry's work relating to the federal government's Action Plan for Official Languages to optimize federal funding to provincial stakeholders:


  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to complete federal report templates
Coordinate the branch's role and responsibility in the Protocol for Agreements for Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction (Protocol) and the Canada-Alberta Bilateral Agreement for Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction (Bilateral):

  • Coordinate and compile information from OLEP funding recipient OLEP Commitment forms and Report forms to develop provincial action plans and reports
Provide issues management to support operational and project plan delivery:

  • Support internal and external stakeholders in meeting federal requirements related to Official Languages projects and funding
  • Organize and track project statuses, reporting requirements and important deadlines
  • Identify potential issues that may impact OLEP in Alberta and assist in risk management
  • Provide consultation and support for issues identification and resolution
  • Participate in panCanadian OLEP Committee meetings to present Alberta's positions and to move forward panCanadian negotiations on a Protocol agreement
  • Develop action requests, briefing materials, environmental scans, correspondence and other tasks as assigned to ensure that division and Ministry executive representatives have appropriate input for decision making.
