    Are you looking for a new opportunity where you will be responsible for managing the geotechnical risks associated with waste dumps, tailing facilities (dams), and mine pit walls through their lifecycle? The Specialist Geotechnical Engineer is Suncor's subject matter expert on the geotechnical aspects of these mine and tailings structures within their assigned area of accountability at Suncor.

    To accomplish this responsibility, you will work closely with the design consultant (Designer of Record) and be knowledgeable in all design, construction and performance information.

    This falls under the oversight of the Principal Geotechnical Engineering for support and senior technical accountability.

    Other supporting resources for this role include an organizational matrix of geotechnical engineering roles including the Geotechnical Advisor, the Resident Geotechnical Engineer(RGE) responsible for field surveillance and construction QA, and other supporting engineers.

    Minimum 10 years relevant engineering experience in large civil earthworks and/or mining projects, which include, design, construction, performance, and operations
    Engineering degree in Civil/Geological/Mining engineering, master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering considered an asset
    Presently registered or eligible to register immediately as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

    Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, and capability with AutoCAD and geotechnical modelling software considered an asset (Geostudio, FLAC, etc.).

    Effective communicator with strong technical, oral, and written communication skills
    Proven project management skills and leadership abilities, at the level required for the role
    Take a lead role in working with an integrated team (schedulers, planners, operations, regulatory, etc.) to deliver a fit for purpose design that is operationally sound, constructable, meets design and regulatory objectives, and is defendable with respect to geotechnical failure modes
    Engage and manage Designers of Record (Consultants) in the development of effective designs for Suncor's tailings facilities and earthen structures
    Manage design work for your structures so that it meets the regulatory, operating, and sustainability requirements of Suncor while:

    meeting the design objectives and project timelines
    communicating design developments and working effectively with mine and tailings planning groups to advance designs
    Provide detailed design reports for regulatory applications
    Manage the quality and completeness of the IFC drawings which meets constructability and execution requirements
    Support the RGE in managing field surveillance and construction QA for ongoing construction
    Manage the work of any supporting staff acting on the behalf of the EoR for quality and completeness of their work
    Mentor supporting staff to aid in their technical development and advancement

    You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.

    This is an office-based role, hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
    Travel to site is required to support the work.
