Position Summary:


The Educational Assistant acts as a liaison between schools, the Education department and Musqueam Indian Band to facilitate the educational needs of K-12 students and their families.

The Worker acts as a resource for students and parents in their home and at school with respect to student problems, available programs and services.

The employee provides frontline academic, economic and cultural support to students.

This may entail responding to family or school requests to do referrals to social services, tutoring services, community health and counsellors.


Duties:


  • Attends school based resource team (SBRT) meetings and opens new cases
  • Advises students on academic issues
  • Conducts parent meetings at agreed upon venues
  • Creates and implements remedial actions plans for each case
  • Receives requests, sets up support services and manages the homework club
  • Acts as a liaison and builds relationships within the community
  • Acts as a representative of MIB
  • Provides information for the Nominal roll process for schools in the district
  • Keeps records and presents reports
  • Undertakes special projects to promote the success of Musqueam Students
  • Adheres to workplace health and safety policies
  • Performs other duties as required

Job Knowledge & Skills:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or Student Counselling from a recognized post secondary institution
  • 23 years direct experience including primary grade student counselling and early childhood education, preferably within a first nations context
  • Ability to draft reports, track requests and manage multiple tasks in the same time period
  • Willingness to pursue continuous skills upgrading
  • Experienced at using Microsoft Office programs and working with data base
  • Cultural competency and knowledge of the MIB's cultural tradition
  • Demonstrating ability to work with and problem solve with a challenging client base

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment (planning, reporting) and offsite at schools or residence within the community

  • Valid Driver's License and reliable vehicle
  • Successful Criminal Record Check and Oath of Confidentiality
