This is what else you can expect from this dynamic role:

  • Excels at developing relationships with government officials and political staff.
  • Trains internal parties on political processes, lobbying techniques, strategies, and tactics.
  • Trains ONA members and staff, while providing supports during campaigning and lobbying initiatives.
  • Monitors current events and the daily legislative calendar for policies and issues affecting ONA's member interests.
  • Gathers research and analyzes both locally and internationally and uses such data as reference to develop policy and ONA positions.
  • Prepares key messaging from polling data, from CIHI and Statistics Canada reports, and from a variety of other sources.
  • Prepares briefs and submissions, letters and correspondence to government, and drafts reports, memos, presentations and briefing notes for the ONA Board of Directors and Senior Executive Team.
  • Develops and maintains a database of government contacts to be used for outreach purposes and relationshipbuilding.
  • Works with external stakeholders to develop alliances on common interests.
  • Collaborates with consultants on strategies, tactics, and reports.
  • Identifies the critical links that must be made between media relations, government relations, advertising, and communications, while planning a strategic course of action.
  • Keeps lines of communication open, and shares information that is relevant for internal stakeholders, including District Service Teams.
  • Contributes to strategy and tactics for local bargaining and other campaigning, and member mobilization initiatives.

What we are looking for:


  • University Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, or related field; postgraduate qualification preferred.
  • Industrial/Labour Relations studies or related equivalent education such as in public affairs, an asset.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of proven experience in public affairs and government relations within a health care setting and/or union experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of government and external relations strategy.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years' experience building relations both internally and externally with government officials, and associated stakeholders, including outreach, relationshipbuilding, and engagement with all MPPs, their opposition counterparts, as well as the Premier's office, Minister of Labour, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, among others.
  • Experience dealing with polling and research firms in establishing criteria for relevant outcomes, as well as survey and questionnaire design techniques.
  • Experience preparing briefs and submissions to government; drafting reports, memos, presentations and briefing notes for a Board and Senior Executive team.
  • Experience with and knowledge of digital action tools such as Action Network and New Mode is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience presenting to industryspecific groups such as the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions, and others, as necessary.
  • Government insight and lobbying experience, ideally within health care.
  • Skilled in prioritysetting, with efficient time and project management skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills ability to juggle multiple duties and projects.
  • Excellent client relations, communication skills verbal, written and presentation are essential, as is a high degree of professionalism and advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of unionized environments, procedures, practices, and techniques used in collective bargaining and labour management negotiations.
  • Knowledge of healthcare legislation, ideally within Ontario.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team and interteam environment.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to, effectively facilitate internal committee workshops, training and meetings.
