Crisis Intervention Counsellor

We operate two emergency safe shelters, as well as community outreach and public education program. Our safe shelter facilities operate on a 24/7 basis. We are dedicated to ending violence against women and their children._

Position Overview:


  • The Crisis Intervention Counsellor is scheduled to work within either HWP Emergency Safe Shelter, and provides crisis intervention counselling, education about violence against women, referral services and advocacy to abused women and their dependents according to the mandate and policies of Halton Women's Place. The Crisis Intervention Counsellor is responsible to ensures the safe, healthy, and effective provision of emergency safe shelter services, along with operating the HWP 24hour Crisis, Information and Support Line and HWP On-Line Chat.

Work Hours

  • Given the nature of this role, it may be required for you to work outside the agreed upon hours from time to time and called upon to work additional shifts as needed._

JOB SUMMARY


Provides crisis intervention counselling, education about violence against women, referral services and advocacy to abused and/or homeless women and their children according to the mandate and policies of Halton Women's Place.

Ensures the safe, healthy, and effective provision of shelter services.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:


DUTIES

  • 1. Responsible for crisis intervention services during assigned shift.
  • Ensures a safe, secure, and healthy environment within the shelter in accordance with shelter policies and procedures (e.g., confidentiality, safety, cleanliness, etc.)
  • Provides crisis intervention to residents and non-residents.
  • Provides counselling and life skills coaching.
  • Advocates for women and their children regarding social assistance, housing, public health, child welfare, police, doctors, lawyers, schools, and other community agencies.
  • Refers women and their children to appropriate agencies and resources as required.
  • Follows through with work from previous shift.
  • Completes intake and departure forms, maintains accurate and up-to-date records, log books and crisis call information.
  • Address disagreements between residents by providing conflict resolution and mediation to de-escalate situations.
  • Holds weekly residents' meetings in accordance with shelter policy, records date, and time of meeting in logbook.
  • Consults with Supervisor and/or colleagues as appropriate.
  • Actively participates in weekly team meetings and full employee meetings.
  • Receives and documents donations and puts them away.
  • Dispenses and records petty cash.
  • Stores medications.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees, students and volunteers as requested.
  • Light house cleaning.
  • Completes other tasks that may from time to time be assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:


  • Social Service Worker Diploma is minimum, Bachelor of Social Work is preferred
  • Previous experience working with and understanding of violence against women
  • Experience in crisis intervention, problemsolving and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work in crisis situations with multiple demands
  • Demonstrated ability to provide nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive support to women and children
  • Willingness to develop knowledge and skills about violence against women and its impact upon children, women and the community
  • Sound knowledge of community agencies and resources
  • Capacity to work in a computerized environment and ability to track stats as needed
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with mínimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to conduct safety planning and resident care plans with women
  • Ability to facilitate women's groups both educational/support and house meetings
  • Assist with onthejob training of new staff, students and volunteers
  • Current CPR and First Aid is required
  • Knowledge of additional languages will be considered an asset
  • Must be available to work all scheduled shifts as assigned
