About the sanctuary


The Dogwood Animal Sanctuary is a newly opened small business providing temporary care to animals in need and a forever home to a variety of species.

We value all animals equally and strive to provide a safe and comfortable environment for them while in our care.

We currently have over 35 resident small farm animals and oversee the care of between cats at all times.


Position Summary


We are seeking a full-time Animal Care Coordinator to oversee and ensure a high standard of day to day care is being provided to our residents.

The chosen applicant will be responsible for a variety of tasks which include leading daily rounds, hands-on animal care and mentorship for part-time staff and volunteers.

Record keeping, organization and initiative are essential aspects of this role. Must be able to work independently and in group settings.

Location:4424 Victoria Road South, Puslinch


Work:
Full-time (35-40hours/week); Monday-Friday including statutory holidays. 1 weekend requirement monthly.


Wage:
$22/hr


A typical day

  • Provide clean water and fresh food to animals daily, clean and disinfect all dishes, bedding and other items used by the animals. Clean and disinfect all cages and rooms within the shelters following sanctuary policies.
  • Ensure the health and behavioral needs of all animals in care are monitored and documented daily.
  • Ensure all animal care, infectious disease and facility cleaning protocols and policies are followed at all times by staff and volunteers.
  • Safely and properly handle and restrain various animals in care with fear free techniques.
  • Handle and interact with animals with aggression or behavioral challenges.
  • Administer general medical care including oral, topical and subcutaneous medications, vaccines, microchipping and bandage changing.
  • Research, recommend and work with the CEO to implement best practices of care for animals. Create new protocols, policies and standard operating procedures under the direction of the CEO.
  • Recruiting, orientating, scheduling, training, motivating and supervising staff and volunteers to gain cooperation in meeting the goals and objectives of the sanctuary.
  • Oversee and organize staff and volunteer shift schedules for Dogwood Animal Sanctuary and Dorset Rescue Kittens.
  • Track and organize inventory and report purchasing requests to the CEO.
  • Work closely with our charity partner, Dorset Rescue Kittens, to facilitate transfers for adoption and assist with adoptions and animal care when needed.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations. Update Health and Safety protocols as needed.
  • Document behavioral, medical and other animal specific information to ShelterLuv.
  • Participate in the transfer of animals to vet clinics and other locations as required.
  • Outdoor work in allweather elements.
  • Communicate with members of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services regarding the animals in our care.
  • Assist with invoicing and budgeting where needed.

Key qualifications and experience

  • Experience managing and training staff is an asset
  • RVT registration is as asset
  • Post secondary education or experience in a related field
  • Ability to safely and properly handle and restrain various animals in care
  • Comfortable handling and interacting with animals who have aggression or behavioral challenges
  • Experience with mentoring and leadership, as well as working closely with team members
  • Ability to work in a confidential and professional setting
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with superior organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and multitask in a highpaced, emotional environment
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with reliable access to a vehicle for transportation to/from the shelter and for animal transportation
  • Selfstarter and ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
  • Ability to lift/drag 50lb objects
  • Animal shelter experience is an asset
