Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

    The Opportunity

This is a contract position for a period of one year.

Do you want to drive the news agenda in Northwest Territories? Do you love breaking news? Are you a leader and mentor? We are looking for a creative, dynamic person to lead our news and current affair team as the Executive Producer of News for NWT, based in Yellowknife.

You will provide hands-on editorial direction to the news and current affairs staff and oversee the journalism on web, radio and TV (a supper-hour TV show, morning, noon and PM radio shows, 6 Indigenous language shows, a weekend radio show, and a pan-northern web page). You will also lead the establishment of a new local all-day TV service in the Territory.

You will ensure CBC North is setting the agenda through our original and enterprise journalism.

You put audience needs at the centre of your decision-making. You understand the role of the public broadcaster in building a stronger local community and in building a stronger Canada.
You have a strong knowledge of reporting within Indigenous communities.

You are a champion of creating an inclusive news and current affairs team, in your editorial choices and within your team.

As the executive producer, you are the go-to person on journalistic policy, standards and judgment in our region.

You think strategically. You can set direction and delegate effectively. But you aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work. You thrive on mentoring and coaching and developing journalists.

You set standards and expectations for collaboration and sharing among teams and platforms to ensure our stories are available to the widest possible audience.
Work must adhere to CBC Journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices, and the Executive Producer must lead their staff or units to ensure that this occurs.

You work with the rest of the leadership team, developing innovative forms of storytelling on all platforms. You will be expected to collaborate with the other CBC North stations, in Whitehorse and Iqaluit and the network newsroom, on major event coverage such as elections. You will also be involved in daily staffing and scheduling decisions and employee feedback.

The successful candidate demonstrates a high level of creative thinking, the ability to originate and develop innovative programs, and/or production concepts, as well as the ability to make immediate decisions in complex and stressful environments.

    Key responsibilities:
    • Oversee journalism in the North.
    • Lead journalistic staff in strengthening our connections with communities.
    • Diversify the range of voices, opinions and creative storytelling the audience sees and hears on CBC
    • Strengthen our content through critical thinking and creative vision.
    • Develop processes for prioritizing enterprise and original journalism and longer-term planning.
    • Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
    • Responsible for resource allocation including budget.
    • Vet as required.
    • Responsible for team development by mentoring and providing opportunities for growth to editorial staff. This includes ongoing feedback and the utilization of established personal development processes of the PDD process.
    • Responsible for leading staff in strategic planning for a continuously changing media environment.
    • Other duties as assigned by the managing editor.
    • Able to perform all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.
    • Ensure journalism meets CBC standards and practices
    • Establish a culture of collaboration among platforms.
    • Work to ensure a pool of qualified casual staff and promote the North within CBC as a place for young journalists to develop and grow.
    Your profile
    • University degree or equivalent.
    • Seven (7) years' experience of which five must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
    • Strong and demonstrated understanding of radio and TV programming and digital/mobile platforms.
    • Proven leadership skills.
    • Superior editorial skills.
    • A thorough knowledge of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
    • A strong programming and current affairs information background.
    • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long term strategic planning.
    • Highly developed vetting skills.
    • Able to communicate effectively and cooperatively.
    • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
    • Highly developed organizational skills.
    • Ability to work independently as well as participate as a member of the production team.
    • Critical listening skills.
    • Ability to contribute innovative "out-of-the-box" thinking to daily production.
    • Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences.
    • A deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
