Position Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Communications, The Communications Officer will provide support to demonstrate the need for the services of The Ottawa Mission and thereby:

  • Increase public understanding of the reasons why people become homeless and how The Ottawa Mission meets their needs for support across a variety of programs and services with the ultimate goal of transitioning them to independence within the community.
  • Increase engagement and understanding across a variety of audiences (e.g., the general public, governments, potential partner agencies, community organizations, volunteers, etc.)
  • Enhances The Mission's fundraising efforts across both annual giving and major gifts activities and programs, thus retaining existing donors as well expanding The Mission's pool of support by attracting new donors.

Major Responsibilities

Content and Communications Support

  • Support for the Director of Communications, including writing original copy and reviewing, editing and proofreading copy for: Annual impact report (1 per year); Press conference throughout the year)collateral, including media advisories and releases, speaking notes, key messages, Q&As, speaker bios, other materials as required; Communication vehicles and other special projects (as needed); Radio PSAs o Development of stories for story bank; Crisis communications (as needed); Program Brochures o Social media posts
  • Answering general inquiries from the public at large (as needed)
  • Writing and review of blog posts, social media content and website content (as needed)
  • Support for the Development Team with writing original copy and reviewing, editing and proofreading copy projects and special events, including:
  • Support writing content for donor newsletters
  • Copywriting for stewardship letters for fund development
  • Writing and review of digital content, including fundraising appeals and stewardship
  • Proposal writing and grant writing (as needed)

Support for Advocacy

  • Support for engagement with policy and decisionmakers within government, including:
  • Analysis of election campaign platforms and commitments
  • Other project as needed

Other Requirements

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, political science, or a related field

Experience
years working within communications (including digital platforms), advocacy or community engagement, preferably within the not-for-profit sector.

  • Written proficiency in the English language
  • Familiarity with digital software including; Hootsuite, WordPress, Mailchimp, Shopify & Google Analytics considered an asset
  • Understanding of issues that inform homelessness considered a strong asset
  • Bilingualism considered a strong asset

Working Conditions

  • Depending on the task, some work can be completed from home office, while other tasks will need to be completed within the Ottawa Mission environment.
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines and manage and respond to competing priorities
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule depending on deadlines for required tasks.
