What can I expect to do in this role?: In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for the administration, oversight and evaluations of contracts related to the maintenance and repair of bridges, structural culverts and retaining wall systems.
  • Be required to development and maintain work and contract related documents, verify all structural maintenance works ensuring that all applicable quality standards and contract requirements are met.
  • Be required to review and/or prepare work plans, cost estimates, and financial forecasts for annual Capital Improvement Projects pertaining to the maintenance and repair of structural assets.
  • Be required to respond to emergency structural incidents, provide inspection and technical support, and coordinate the mobilization of the necessary resources to support a resolution.
  • Be required to liaise with a variety of internal and external departments and/or agencies.
  • Be required to work in accordance with functionallyrelated legislation, Quality Standards and policies to ensure safety of the travelling public.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


Technical Knowledge and Skills:


  • You have knowledge of and skills in practices, procedures and materials related to the maintenance and repair of a variety of bridges, structural culverts, and retaining wall systems to prepare, administer and evaluate functional and hired equipment contracts.
  • You have knowledge of quality Standards, policies, directives and guidelines for traffic management, the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of the provincial highway system.

Contract Management Knowledge and Skills:


  • You have knowledge of contract management and administrative procedures, reporting requirements and documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates, administer contract terms, manage financial and operational matters, and make recommendations.
  • You have skill in reading and interpreting contract plans, documents and specifications to monitor and ensure conduct of work in accordance with contract specifications.

Communication, Interpresonal, Negotiation and Persuasion Skills:

  • You have well developed communication and interpersonal skills with tact and good judgement.
  • You have demonstrated negotiation and persuasion skills to respond effectively to complaints from public, ensure compliance with legislation and policies.
  • You can guide and advise contractors in maintenance/repair operations including emergency situations and structure failures.
  • You can respond at off hours to emergency situations, including serious or fatal accident scenes; deal with police matters such as structure damages and liaise with other jurisdictions on hazardous situations.

Organizational and Leadership Skills:


  • You can plan and prioritize numerous projects including the coordination of resources and materials.
  • You will coordinate, organize and direct the activities of support staff assigned to maintenance operations and contract administration.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:


  • You can assess and determine the most practical and economical type of repair required for a bridge and/or culvert defect/failure
  • You can assess the validity of complaints and financial implications, and determine how best to resolve the problems and respond effectively to public complaints.
