Join the Facility Maintenance Services team as a Plumbing Apprentice You will develop technical expertise as you learn about all aspects of the trade from a diverse group of journeymen while following the program as outlined by Alberta Industry and Trades.

Working in a safe, clean environment with state of the art tools and under the guidance of these journeymen, you will perform preventative maintenance and service/repair operations on mechanical systems and components of City owned/operated facilities.

Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Assist Journeyperson plumbers in their daily tasks such as carrying tools, materials, equipment as well as setting up work areas
  • Learn to measure, cut and assemble pipes using various techniques such as soldering, pressing, or gluingInstall and replace, plumbing fixtures, valves and other plumbing trim or components
  • Execute preventative maintenance on all types of plumbing and heating equipment
  • Fix leaks, unclog drains, replace faulty components and troubleshoot plumbing issues
  • Clean, adjust, test and repair gas fired heating appliances (natural and propane gas)
  • Properly dispose of debris, and ensure tools and equipment are properly stored
  • Perform emergency repairs to plumbing and heating systems
  • Maintain, troubleshot and repair pool circulation equipment and treatment systems
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Currently enrolled in a plumber apprenticeship program with at least 2 years of apprenticeship experience composed of AIT validation stamp
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in the a maintenance or construction environment
  • Knowledge development of building maintenance procedures, construction methods, and regulatory codes such as the National Plumbing Code of Canada and Fire Safety Code in the Plumbing/Gasfitting trades
  • Knowledge development of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to work safely with a variety of power tools
  • Strong communication and customer service skills (written and verbal)
  • Commitment to continual learning, teamwork and providing excellent customer service
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position; frequent lifting of tools, materials and assemblies weighing up to fifty pounds is required. Capable of passing a jobrelated physical abilities evaluation may be required.
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Hire is dependent on Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
