    Description: The University of Toronto at St. George Campus Safety Services is currently accepting applications from motivated, dedicated and community-oriented individuals for vacant 4th Class Special Constable positions. Campus Safety is a Special Constable service operating under agreement with Toronto Police Services and Peel Regional Police Services. We are committed to delivering community safety and security services that are sensitive to the needs of our community, through collaborative partnerships and teamwork. We are seeking talented individuals who can meet the challenges of community-based policing in Canada's most diverse university environment and who represent its population. An applicant's previous experience as a special constable or police officer may be recognized and consideration given for a higher salary classification. The classification for any experienced officer will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

    Duties:

    • Providing effective law enforcement and security services to the University of Toronto;
    • Performs foot, bicycle and mobile patrols;
    • Performs traffic and crowd control duties;
    • Investigating and reporting activity that may violate University policies, federal or provincial legislation; taking statements from victims, witnesses and suspects;
    • Under supervision investigates crime-related occurrences on University of Toronto property;
    • Gathering and preserving evidence; apprehending, arresting and releasing offenders; executing warrants; transporting prisoners;
    • Journals all relevant information and prepares reports using NicheRMS software;
    • Provides physical security for visiting dignitaries;
    • Provides crime prevention and safety programs to the University community;
    • Other related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: Minimum Educational Requirement: In addition to having a secondary school diploma or equivalent, you have successfully graduated from an accredited university or college. For those applicants who do not possess a university degree or a recognized community college diploma, consideration may be given to those who have three (3) years of related experience in policing, as a special constable, loss prevention or security and can demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge of the laws of Canada and the Province of Ontario.

    Experience: One (1) year of related work experience is desirable; education may be substituted for experience.

    Other: Clearances: Must have no criminal convictions without pardon and be able to qualify for, be appointed to and maintain Special Constable Status through background checks conducted by the Toronto Police Service and receive clearance from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and/or other jurisdictional authorities for access to CPIC and other restricted databases. Please note: these clearances are a condition of employment and must be maintained.

    Testing: Must be able to pass interviews, a medical examination and psychological testing. Participate in and pass a fitness test using the Ontario Police Fitness Award guidelines. Campus Safety will conduct this test.

    Secondary School Diploma or equivalency, Bill 68, Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act, 2019 Section 92(g) makes it a requirement of Appointment of a Special Constable. If education was received outside of the province or if you did not complete high school an equivalency assessment document is required.

    Driver's License: Must possess a non-probationary, valid Ontario class "G" driver's license with a satisfactory driving record (a 3-year uncertified Driver's record must be submitted with your application).

    Required Certifications: All applicants must be in possession of a current, valid Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR Certificate.

    Communication Skills: Must demonstrate excellent communication skills and have the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all members of the University community. Must be able to exercise discretion and confidentiality.

    • A current copy of a Ministry of Transportation Statement of Driving Record (a 3 year uncertified Driver's record can be requested online from Service Ontario)
    • A current copy (no more than 3 months old) of a Criminal record and Judicial metters check letter from the police service in the jurisdiction in which you reside. Please note: Applicants who are contacted for an interview will be asked to present all original documents, Secondary School Diploma, Criminal record and Judicial metters check and Standard First-Aid Certificate, Level "C" CPR Certificate.

    Union: This position is part of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Local 519.

    Hours of Work: Full-time, average 40 hours per week; 12-hour, 10-hour, or 8-hour rotating shifts in a 24/7 operation.

    • 4th Class Constable - $29.47 per hour
